The Trump-Russia Story Is Coming Together. Here's How to Make Sense of It 28.11.2017 Truthout.com
Donald Trump, Jr. greets his father, then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, during the town hall debate at Washington University on October 9, 2016, in St Louis, Missouri. (Photo: Rick Wilking-Pool / Getty Images) In these troubling and surreal times, honest journalism is more important than ever. Help us keep real news flowing: Make a donation to Truthout today. The news is coming so fast and furious, from so many sources and in so many fragments, that it takes more than a scorecard to keep up with the Trump-Russia connection. It takes a timeline -- a "map," if you will, of where events and names and dates and deeds converge into a story that makes sense of the incredible scandal of the 2016 election and now of the Trump Administration.  For years Steve Harper produced timelines for the cases he argued or defended in court as a successful litigator. Retired now from practicing law, Harper has turned his experience, talent, and curiosity to monitoring for BillMoyers.com the bizarre and ...

Is the CIA Reformable? 20.7.2017 Truthout.com
In The Failure of Intelligence, I documented the CIA's resistance to reform and the corruption in both the analytical and operational directorates. But not every agency or department of government can be reformed, and it is possible that the intricate web of habits, procedures and culture places the CIA in the non-reformable category. Once the political culture of an institution such as the CIA has been broken, it is extremely difficult -- if not impossible -- to rebuild or repair it. The CIA symbol is shown on the floor of CIA Headquarters, July 9, 2004, at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The CIA's mission has gone dangerously and lethally astray, argues Melvin A. Goodman, former CIA intelligence analyst. (Photo: Mark Wilson / Getty Images) In this excerpt, the former CIA intelligence analyst ponders the meanings of the words whistleblower, dissident and contrarian, how they apply to himself and others, and whether the CIA can ever be repaired or rebuilt. Whistleblowers. Dissidents. ...

Will John McCain protect America from Trump's strange affinity for Putin? 6.1.2017 LA Times: Commentary

I would love to know what John McCain is thinking right now as he ponders the coming presidency of a man who appears to admire a Russian tyrant far more than he does the intelligence agents of his own country. Does a word like treason run through his mind?

The Republican senator from Arizona is...

5 Ways Hackers Could Influence the Election 4.8.2016 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
When Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump said he hoped the Russian government had found Hillary Clinton's 30,000 missing emails, he wasn't just taking a swipe at his opponent. He highlighted a very real and present danger to our democracy. While social media users were atwitter about whether or not The Donald had committed treason--for the record, he didn't--I don't know if his quasi-seditious braggadocio reveals anything about his loyalty to the country he hopes to represent at home and abroad. Personally, it made me wonder about his fitness to lead a nation daily engaged in cyber military operations that almost certainly make the Stuxnet attack on Iran's nuclear program look like Day One. And far more importantly, it made me question whether Trump understands just how serious the threat of hacking is -- and that such a lack of understanding could cost him the election. The Stakes Have Never Been Higher We now have fresh evidence that suggests Russia (its leader, an apparent fan of the ...

Citizenfour: The Spy Who Was Never Out in the Cold 30.10.2014 Politics on HuffingtonPost.com
Officers of the CIA's clandestine service are often warned: don't fall in love with your agents. This cautionary advice is meant to be interpreted literally and figuratively. In Laura Poitras' compelling, controversial, and ultimately contradictory new documentary Citizenfour, the filmmaker seems to have fallen in love with her "agent" -- in this case the movie's hero, or villain, depending upon how you look at it -- Edward Snowden. To be clear: contrary to popular jargon, a "CIA agent" is not the American employee of the Agency itself, but rather the recruited foreign human asset -- the person committing treason against his country or double-crossing the organization to which he belongs -- albeit for a higher purpose, from the CIA's perspective, of supplying valuable secret information to the USG. While it might not have been Poitras' intent, Citizenfour reveals, among other things, just how desperately Edward Snowden wanted to be -- more than just an agent, or even an agent of change -- a good ...

Restore Honor and Pardon Edward Snowden 13.8.2013 Commondreams.org Views
Robert Scheer

How do you justify criminally charging a government contractor for revealing an alarming truth that the public has every right to know? That is the contradiction raised by President Obama now that he has, in effect, acknowledged that Edward Snowden was an indispensable whistle-blower who significantly raised public awareness about a government threat to our freedom. (Photo: AP/Vincent Yu)
