Samsung's 5G mobile claims played down by experts 14.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Researchers say no standard has yet been agreed despite claim to have developed system hundreds of times faster than 4G Researchers have played down claims by Samsung to have developed "5G" mobile systems able to transmit data hundreds of times faster than 4G networks, pointing out that its tests only apply to one element of the system needed to implement a standard. The key problem is that there is no agreed 5G standard – and may not be for years, explained Shahram Niri, deputy director of the 5G Innovation Centre at Centre for Communications Systems Research (CCSR) at the University of Surrey. "There are a number of area in which this technology is being improved," Niri said. "What Samsung has done has touched on one of the areas relating to antennas, and with that achieved a higher data rate – but this is just one of many methods being examined to increase it." Other elements required to build the standard include the method of encoding data in the radio carrier wave and the ...

Supreme Court rules for Monsanto in Indiana farmer's GM seeds case 13.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Justice Elena Kagan says Vernon Bowman's late-season soybean crop infringed on patent for GM soybeans The US Supreme Court came down solidly on the side of the agricultural giant Monsanto on Monday, ruling unanimously that an Indiana farmer could not use patented genetically modified soybeans to create new seeds without paying the company. The case – which was cast by the farmer's supporters as a classic tale of David vs Goliath – could well dictate the future of modern farming. In an unanimous ruling written by Justice Elena Kagan, the court ruled that the farmer, Vernon Bowman, had infringed on Monsanto's patent for its GM soybeans when he bought some of those seeds from a local grain elevator and planted them for a second, late-season crop . Monsanto sued, arguing that Bowman had signed a contract when he initially bought the Roundup Ready soybeans in the spring, agreeing not to save any of the harvest for replanting. The seeds are genetically modified to be resistant to Roundup Ready ...

Google under pressure to cut $5bn valuation of smartphone patents 8.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
US firm's mobile arm faces fines from European commission's antitrust unit for trying to use patents to block Apple iPhone sales Google could face pressure to write down the $5bn (£3.2bn) value of the patents in its Motorola subsidiary, as the mobile arm faces fines from Europe's antitrust commissioner for trying to use them to block sales of Apple's iPhone in Germany. The European commission's antitrust unit raised a formal statement of objections this week, which could be followed by a substantial fine, after Motorola tried to use a number of its standards-essential patent (SEPs) to try to stop sales of iPhones with 3G network capability in Germany. Using such patents to try to block rival products from companies that are willing to license them, as Apple was, constitutes "abuse of a dominant position", the unit said. Standards-essential patents have to be used to make a phone or device meet standards such as 3G and 4G phone standards, the wireless Wi-Fi connection or the video ...
