NASA postpones Parker Solar Probe mission to Sunday morning after 'a condition' 11.8.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
NASA on Saturday scrubbed the Parker Solar Probe, announcing that the launch team will attempt the mission on Sunday morning. The first ever spacecraft to fly directly toward the Sun was poised to blast off today, on a mission to plunge into our star's sizzling atmosphere and unlock the mysteries of the centre of the solar system. NASA's car-sized, USD 1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe is scheduled to launch on a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida now on Sunday morning. The time has not been specified as yet. By coming closer to the Sun than any spacecraft in history, the unmanned probe's main goal is to unveil the secrets of the corona, the unusual atmosphere around the Sun. "We are going to be in an area that is so exciting, where solar wind -- we believe -- will be accelerating," said NASA planetary science division director Jim Green. "Where we see huge magnetic fields that are passing by us, as coronal mass ejections make their way out into the solar system." Not only is the corona ...

NASA counts down to the launch of first spacecraft which will touch the 'Sun' 10.8.2018 DNA: Popular News
NASA counted down today to the launch of a USD 1.5 billion spacecraft that aims to plunge into the Sun's sizzling atmosphere and become humanity's first mission to explore a star. The car-sized Parker Solar Probe is scheduled to blast off on a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida early tomorrow. The 65-minute launch window opens at 3:33 am (local time), and the weather forecast is 70 percent favorable for takeoff, NASA said. The probe's main goal is to unveil the secrets of the corona, the unusual atmosphere around Sun. Not only is the corona about 300 times hotter than the Sun's surface, it also hurls powerful plasma and energetic particles that can unleash geomagnetic space storms and disrupt Earth's power grid. "The Parker Solar Probe will help us do a much better job of predicting when a disturbance in the solar wind could hit Earth," said Justin Kasper, one of the project scientists and a professor at the University of Michigan. The probe is protected by an ultra-powerful heat shield ...

Tokyo unscathed as weakening typhoon brushes by, heads north 9.8.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Japan's capital of Tokyo was unscathed on Thursday after a weakening typhoon brushed by it and headed north, pounding the coastline with rain and high winds, with scores of cancelled flights, and some power outages, in its wake. Though typhoon "Shanshan," a Chinese girl's name, had been predicted to possibly make landfall near Tokyo, a northeasterly twist to its course kept it out at sea and spared the capital more than high winds and heavy rains, which had mostly dissipated by morning. By late morning the centre of the storm was in the Pacific just off the city of Mito, about 100 km (62 miles) northeast of Tokyo, and set to weaken to tropical storm strength within hours as it moves further east into the Pacific. Around 100 domestic flights were cancelled and some trains, and there were about 2,000 households without power, but Tokyo's vast transportation system was operating mostly as usual. Japan has suffered from one weather disaster after another in the last six weeks, including a deadly heatwave ...

RFP for 1,000 MW wind power projects by August in Gujarat 21.7.2018 DNA: Top News
Work on the ambitious 1,000 MW wind power project planned off Gujarat's coast, the first such project in India, is set to commence as the Request for Proposal (RFP) is expected to be issued by next month, a senior Gujarat government official said. The 1,000 MW project, to be undertaken jointly by Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and state government, is proposed to come up 12 nautical miles off Pipavav coast. The windmills will spread over seabed of hundreds of square kilometres. The European Union is funding and providing technical assistance in the preliminary implementation of the tentative capacity of 200 MW. "The MNRE had invited expressions of interest, and it received response from 35 companies. Meetings about the project are slated for July 23 and 24. We expect RFP for the project to be issued by next month," Raj Gopal, principal secretary of energy & petrochemicals department, told reporters. Rajasthan: Solar energy is now the preferred source of power 9.7.2018 DNA: Money
Solar energy has ticked off all the necessary boxes to become a favourite of the suppliers in search of an efficient source of power. Solar energy is the way forward towards clean energy in the state rather than wind energy given its low rate in the state.  In last few years, the rates of solar energy have come down drastically in comparison to wind energy. A record low solar tariff of Rs 2.44 per unit was achieved in Bhadla in the state in 2017 during the bidding carried out by solar energy corporation limited in 2017 for Bhadla Solar Park. A solar investor said that after various bidding rounds of  wind energy at the Centre it turned out to be about 10 per cent costlier than solar energy. Such is the prevailing situation in the state that not many new investments in wind energy sector are coming its way. “There is hardly any new investment and the cost of windmill is not going down significantly thus not making the power competitive as compared to the solar energy,” said a wind energy producer from the ...

New power lines might accelerate bustard extinction in Gujarat 8.7.2018 DNA: Money
The thrust towards green energy is having an environmental cost that few had foreseen. The power lines that connect windmills and solar power plants are turning out to be death traps for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustards (GIB) in Gujarat. In the last decade alone, power lines have claimed the lives of about 10-15 GIBs in the GIB-range states of India. If that wasn't enough, the GETCO substation at Bhachunda, where the company plans to put about 15 to 20 power lines, is another potential death trap, claim activists, adding that it is right in the middle of a bustard habitat. Devesh Gadhvi of The Corbett Foundation, an organisation that is working towards GIB conservation, said, "The windmills, by virtue of being green energy, do not require an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) before being set up, especially outside forest areas. The same happens with the power lines as well.  This means that when such plants are set up in revenue areas, adjacent to the forest areas, which are actually ...
