NDB okays 1st tranche of $100 mn loan for Rajasthan water project 15.2.2018 General News
The New Development Bank (NDB) has signed a loan agreement of USD 100 million with the government for financing a water project in Rajasthan. The loan agreement for financing of Rajasthan Water Sector Restructuring Project for the desert areas was signed between the Government of India and NDB on February 13, 2018, an official statement said today. The loan is the first tranche of the USD 345 million by the NDB under the multi tranche financing facility for this project. "The objective of this project is to rehabilitate the 678 km long Indira Gandhi Canal system built during 1958-63 to prevent seepage, conserve water, and enhance water use efficiency as mandated by both national and state level policies on water use," the finance ministry said in a statement. A sum of Rs 218.50 crore and Rs 195 crore will be utilised towards improving water supply and underground drainage system. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) today urged the Assam government to sort out the problematic areas that are hindering the timely completion of projects funded by it in the state. "There are problems in entry permission procedures. The security situation is also a cause of concern. Availability of land, preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment and counterpart funds are matters of concern in Assam," JICA India Office Chief Representative Takema Sakamoto said on the first day of the two-day global investors summit Advantage Assam. NGT directs sealing of illegal borewells in Delhi in 3 months 31.1.2018 General News
The National Green Tribunal today directed the Delhi government to seal all unauthorised borewells in the national capital within three months. Expressing concern over illegal extraction of water through borewells in the city, a bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice U D Salvi passed the direction after perusing a report filed by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) saying there were many borewells which were running without consent from the authorities. The tribunal directed the Deputy Commissioner from the Department of Revenue to enforce the directions and asked the police to provide necessary assistance in this regard. The green panel also directed the authorities to mark the borewells, which are discharging contaminated water containing high levels of fluoride and arsenic, in red colour to apprise the public that the water was unfit for consumption. World Bank commits USD 100 mn to boost rural economy of TN 30.1.2018 General News
The government and World Bank today signed a USD 100 million (about Rs 6,400 crore) loan agreement to promote rural economy in selected blocks of Tamil Nadu across 26 districts, benefiting over 4 lakh people. The funding aimed at promoting rural enterprises, facilitate their access to finance, and create employment opportunities for youth particularly women, the finance ministry said in a statement. The Tamil Nadu Rural Transformation Project will create an enabling environment for producer organisations and enterprises to promote businesses across select value chains, it said. Water level in 91 reservoirs at 45 per cent of total capacity 29.1.2018 General News
The water level in 91 major reservoirs across the country is at 45 per cent of total storage capacity, according to an official statement. As of January 25, there was 73.029 billion cubic metres (BCM) water in the reservoirs. The latest water levels in the reservoirs are 91 per cent of the storage reported in the corresponding period last year, the Union water resources ministry said in the statement. The water stock is 91 per cent of the decadal average as well, the statement added. Reservoirs in states such as Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana have reported lower levels than than last year. Major dams in Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Tripura, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have reported better storage level vis--vis the corresponding period last year.
