Mumbai: Two auto drivers get 7-yr jail for trying to rape a Dutch student 14.8.2018 DNA: Money
The Dindoshi Sessions Court on Monday sentenced two auto-rickshaw drivers to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, who were held guilty for attempting to commit rape on an 18-year-old student from Holland, who had come to Mumbai on a student exchange programme in 2011. The prosecution had examined a total of 24 witnesses in the case. All of them had supported the prosecution. Additional Session's judge H C Shendge had convicted the two accused Anil Yadav (34) and Rajpati Nishad (27) on Saturday. However, since the defence advocates were unavailable, the sentenced was posted for Monday. The court held the two men guilty under the charges of wrongful restrain, robbery, attempt to rape and attempt to outrage the modesty of a woman. The case dates back to 2011. A female boxer thrashed four youths in Nihal Vihar area after they tried to pass lewd remarks at her and were trying to harass her on Wednesday night. A Daria man was sentenced to two years in jail for calling a minor girl ‘sexy’ and then slapping her and her brother after they protested. According to Hindustan Times, the court of additional district and sessions judge Poonam R Joshi also imposed a fine of Rs 21,000 on Chandigarh resident Pankaj Singh (23), who, however, was immediately bailed out as per provisions of law for imprisonment less than three years. Last September, Singh had allegedly called the girl, aged 17, sexy while she was returning from college. The victim protested only for Pankaj to slap her. Maharashtra has max assault on women 1.12.2017 DNA: Urban Tales
As data released by the National Crime Records Bureau reveals, Maharashtra has a daunting task ahead of it to curb crimes against women and children. The state topped the country in cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, as 11,396 cases were registered in 2016; ranking second in kidnapping and abduction of women, with 6,170 cases; and third in cases of rape, with 4,189 cases. Among 19 metropolitan cities, which have a population of over 20 lakh, Mumbai accounted for 12.3 percent of the cases of crimes against women in 2016, with 5,128 of the total of 41,761 cases registered in the city. Mumbai followed Delhi, which topped the list with 33 percent of the cases. Mumbai ranked second among metropolitan cities in cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty. Delhi, with 3,746 cases, was followed by Mumbai with 2,183 cases, and Bengaluru (820 cases) in 2016.
