Not just Bengaluru, Delhi too had a New Year of shame 6.1.2017 DNA: India
It isn't just Bengaluru that should feel ashamed for the mass molestation of women that happened on New Year's Eve. On the same day, a mob of drunk men went berserk molesting women in North-West Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar. When the police tried to intervene, the mob started attacking them too, injuring at least three police personnel. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at nearby shops. Police have questioned around 1,200 students so far, with regard to the incident. When asked for details of the incident, Constable Anil Kaushik who was present at the location told DNA that the incident occurred around 11:15pm on the 31st last year. "I was walking through the 'Apni Rasoi' restaurant lane when I saw two boys trying to pull a girl off a bike. The girl was with another man on the motorcycle and held onto it, narrowly escaping a fall." I called Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ranjeet Singh and more forces, but one of the accused, who was in a blue jacket, began running," said Kaushik. He ...

‘These things’ should not happen, dear minister 4.1.2017 DNA: Top News
Moments after repeat offender Abu Asim Azmi put his foot in his mouth in a fashion he deems quite effective, Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi was in an informal gathering with a bunch of scribes, mostly women. Unsurprisingly, the demand for a comment was raised. “What will happen if I comment? It’s not like I can change anything,” she said, with a note of resignation. Gandhi’s despair is not a lone one, and neither is it displaced. In an environment where day after day, cutting across parties or regions, male politicians let loose their unwarranted opinions, influenced by a carefully-guarded social conditioning mired in deep set patriarchy, it is not a surprise that everything from short skirts to mobile phones to chowmein suffer the blame for any instance of violence against women. Anything or anyone, except for the men who clearly have no respect for the zippers that hold their own. While Azmi says that the Bangalore mass molestation took place on New Year’s Eve since ...

Victims can't state facts like parrot, minor contradictions bound to happen: Court says in molestation case 27.12.2016 DNA: Top News
Victims cannot be expected to state facts in a "parrot-like manner" and minor contradictions are bound to happen after a lapse of time, a Delhi court has said while sending four men to jail in a molestation and assault case after relying on the complainant's statement. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain sent the four men, all Delhi residents, to one year rigorous imprisonment for molesting, threatening and voluntarily causing hurt to the victim, a married woman, after forcefully entering her house when she was alone. "Facts and circumstances clearly show that all accused persons assaulted and used criminal force on her to outrage her modesty. "They gagged her mouth and tore her clothes," the judge said while holding the accused guilty. Rejecting the argument about there being discrepancies in the woman's testimony, the judge said, "Victim of such an incident cannot be expected to possess photographic memory and to state the facts in a parrot-like manner. "Minor contradictions are bound to happen if ...
