| The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of the Right to Education Act, which provides for free and compulsory education to children aged between six and 14 years and mandates all schools, including private schools, to reserve 25 per cent seats for the poor. This landmark judgment will help children from poor socio-economic background to pursue their academic dreams and also aid in improving the literacy rate of the country.

It was pure luck that the 8.6 intensity earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia did not cause any serious damage. This was probably because the epicentre was located a few hundred kilometres into the sea and away from inhabited areas. However, we must not drop our guard against a possible tsunami or a major earthquake. The government must take into account the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011, which resulted in the release of radioactive materials, and ensure that our country’s ... |
