Sumatra shocker for state
(Cached)
|
12.4.2012 |
Asian Age: India |
| The two great earthquakes off the west coast of northern Sumatra were felt in the city and other parts of the country, including the east coast and Kerala on Wednesday.
While tsunami warning was issued in south India, the region escaped disaster due to the horizontal shifting of the tectonic plates. The maximum change in tides was experienced at Kambell Bay in Greater Nicobar, where the waves reached 45 cm.
“In all, there were four earthquakes off the coast of northern Sumatra on Wednesday. While the intensity of two was very high, the effects of aftershocks were also intense,” said Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre.
“The first earthquake struck at 2.08 pm with an intensity of 8.5 on the Richter scale. The other major quake occurred at 4.13 pm and measured 8.1 on the Richter scale,” he added.
National Institute of Ocean Technology director, Dr M.A. Atmanand, noted that with the help of exact ... |

Tremors felt in several cities across South India

Asian Age: India |
| Tremors were felt in Chennai, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and several other cities across South India following the 8.7 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia.
Areas near Marina Beach Road in Chennai have been alerted in the wake of several coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands being put on alert, police said.
There were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of lives.
In December 2004, killer Tsunami waves devastated several coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and hit Marina Beach here, causing heavy casualties.
In Kerala, people in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi experienced slight tremors. The country's IT capital Bangalore also experienced mild tremors, police said.
People rushed out of houses and high rise office buildings in panic in these cities. ... |

Asian Age: India |
| A powerful 8.6 magnitude earthquake and strong aftershocks struck off Indonesia on Wednesday, sending people as far away as southern India scurrying from buildings and raising fears of a disastrous tsunami - a repeat of 2004.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Aceh, the Indonesian province closest to the initial earthquake. But an aftershock of almost the same magnitude, less deep that the first quake, hit soon after he finished speaking.
The tremors also sent tens of thousands scurrying out of high-rise buildings and houses in several Indian cities from Guwahati and Kolkata to Chennai and Kochi.
The first quake off the Indonesian coast at 2.08 p.m. swayed buildings in Aceh province in Indonesia. A while later, the second temblor struck.
