Strong winds in the Atlantic Ocean, more than 10,000 kms from the Indian coasts, have given rise to high energy waves in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal prompting the government to issue alerts for several states over last one week. Though, these high energy waves, which may rise up to 2-3 metres and are perilous, experts say, because of their capacity to breach the coast, did not cause any death, property and houses were destroyed, officials said. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), a unit of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, issued 'swells' alerts to states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, besides Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep archipelago. Alerts were also issued to the coasts of Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat, officials said. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has warned fishermen and residents about "rough to very rough" sea conditions along the coasts of Karnataka, Kerala, southern Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep tomorrow. It has advised fishermen and residents not to venture into the coastal areas. INCOIS, which comes under Ministry of Earth Sciences, issues tsunami alerts for India and neighbouring countries. It has also issued a forecast for "rough sea conditions" along and off the coast of West Bengal, Odisha, north Andhra Pradesh coasts and west coast of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The first Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise of the Indian Air Force in association with South Asian Region nations will be held off the coast of Kerala from March 12 to 17. The multilateral exercise named 'Samvedna' is the first composite HADR exercise in the South Asian Region and would involve representatives from air forces of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and the UAE, a defence release said here today. The objective of the exercise is to galvanise all stakeholders in synergising a unified HADR efforts, it said. The entire settings of the exercise is based on a scenario of a tsunami in the western coast of India originating from an earthquake in Makran subduction zone and resulting in post-tsunami disaster management along the western coast and western islands of India. According to the release, the exercise, hosted by the Southern Air Command, will provide a clear understanding of the scope, role and task, including challenges in air operations and ensure .

The Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt has donated Rs two crore to Cyclone Ockhi relief fund. A cheque for the amount was handed over by Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, Vice-Chairman of the Mutt, to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his office here today, a mutt press release said. Immediately following the disaster, volunteers of the Mutt had set up food relief camps for widows and hundreds of affected families, at times working in collaboration with local churches. Free treatment for the injured was also offered at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, the release said. Amid protests in coastal hamlets against Kerala authorities reported failure in warning fishermen ahead of the cyclonic storm Ockhi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sought calm and made an assurance that rescue operations would continue till all the untraced fishermen were brought back.
