Violent protests erupted in the Cauvery basin districts, mainly Mandya and Mysuru, on Monday as protesters torched and attacked vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu registration number, and even the occupants. The deteriorating law and order situation forced authorities to clamp prohibitory orders in Mandya and Mysuru cities. The police resorted to mild caning and used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters in several areas. Holiday for schools A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Mandya district till September 17. The sale of liquor has been banned till September 18. Protesters blocked the main Mysuru-Bengaluru national highway and the alternative route, the Bengaluru-Kanakapura-Kollegal-Dindigul highway, at several places. The seven routes to Tamil Nadu that originate in Chamarajanagar district were blocked by protesters near the border. Principal Secretary to the Department of Horticulture and the District In-charge Secretary Rajiv Chawla on Monday directed officials to seed Aadhaar number of beneficiaries to extend benefits of various schemes. Presiding over a progress review meeting at convened at the DC's office hall here, he said, "The seeding of Aadhaar numbers will also help in checking loopholes in the distribution system and also duplication of beneficiaries. The genuine beneficiaries will be largely benefitted." Taking cognisance of the seeding of Aadhaar numbers of 66,995 (56.30%) beneficiaries against 1,19,018 beneficiaries identified under various social security schemes, Chawla directed the officials to complete the work at the earliest. He also informed the meeting about documenting the harvesting of crops by recording it on mobile phone camera, as more 3,000 experiments on harvesting has been conducted in the district. The High Court has ordered the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to pay a compensation of Rs 32,84,453 to four farmers whose crops were damaged following the release of filter backwash from a water purifying unit to their agricultural fields. The MCC has constructed a water purifying unit at Thumbe under Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project (KUDCEMP) to supply drinking water to the citizens. It had allowed filter backwash from the unit to flow through a canal to a water body. As the water body was filled with silt and the water could not flow easily, the silt filled filter backwash entered agricultural land and damaged the crops. The land owners could not take up farming activities on the land as the filter backwash entered the fertile land. Four farmers filed a writ petition in the High Court against the government seeking compensation for the loss of crops on their fertile land.
