NASA's latest planet hunting satellite was successfully launched today on the first-of-its-kind mission to find new worlds beyond our solar system and identify the ones that could support alien life. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which is expected to find thousands of new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, lifted off at 4:21 am IST today on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The twin solar arrays that will power the spacecraft were successfully deployed soon after. "We are thrilled TESS is on its way to help us discover worlds we have yet to imagine, worlds that could possibly be habitable, or harbour life," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. ICRA Ratings today said the wind power capacity addition will improve to 3 GW this fiscal, backed by project awards by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and state utilities. "The capacity addition in the wind power sector is expected to improve to about 3 GW in FY2019, backed by the project awards by the SECI and state distribution utilities since February 2017," said Sabyasachi Majumdar, Senior Vice President & Group Head, ICRA Ratings in a statement. Majumdar further said the SECI and the distribution utilities in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have issued bids for wind-power capacity of 7.5 GW over the past 14 months. With 20 projects of 1,500 MW capacity in pipeline, Rajasthan is targeting to increase its solar power generation to 3,780 MW by April next year in order to achieve the goal of 7,000 MW clean energy capacity in the next four years. The current solar power generation is contributing 10 per cent to the total power consumption in the state and we are targeting to increase it to 17 per cent by 2021, Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Managing Director B K Doshi told PTI. Cloudy conditions keeping night temp high in Maha 17.4.2018 General News
The cloudy conditions over Maharashtra have kept the night temperatures high and would prevail for the next couple of days, a Met official said today. "The weather stations across Maharashtra recorded a significant rise in the minimum temperature, which has kept the nights warmer. The extra moisture from the Arabian sea and the bay of Bengal have led to formation of clouds over state of Maharashtra. Nitish cabinet approves subsidy for power consumers 17.4.2018 General News
The Bihar cabinet today gave its nod for giving subsidy to energy consumers after the state regulatory commission had hiked the power tariff by five per cent for 2018-19. The decision to give much needed respite to power consumers was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) had on March 21 last announced the new power tariff for 2018-19. Last year too, the state govenrnment had announced the similar subsidy for power consumers after the Commission had ordered for 55 per cent hike in power tariff. Briefing mediapersons after cabinet meeting, Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said the cabinet decided to give a subsidy of Rs 3.45 per unit for domestic consumers in rural areas thus bringing the effective rate to Rs 3.17 per unit. Maharashtra government today approved a scheme to provide electricity connection through a High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS) to farmers?for their agriculture pumps. The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Power Minister Chandrashekhhar?Bawankule told reporters here. The scheme, estimated to cost Rs 5048 crore, will benefit around 2.24 lakh farmers?who are awaiting new power connections, the minister said.
