Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), in association with NSS and the State Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, will be organising a study on the coastal stretch and shores in Udupi district by organising a Jatha. NHRC seeks report from state on gastro deaths in Shivamogga 13.2.2018 Deccan Herald - State
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday sought a report from the Karnataka government over reports of deaths due to acute gastroenteritis in Shivamogga district. It asked the Chief Secretary to submit a report within four weeks on the three deaths and hospitalisation of 35 others in Bhadravathi taluk. The NHRC said the district health officer had stated that the consumption of contaminated piped drinking water is suspected to be the reason behind the outbreak of gastroenteritis. The piped drinking water is supplied by the gram panchayat. It is observed that if the contents of the news report are true, it raises serious issue of violation of right to life and health of the victims as drinking water is a basic amenity and the state is bound to ensure its uncontaminated supply. A man and his son died while 45 others fell ill after drinking contaminated water at Maidolalu village in Bhadravati taluk on Sunday. The deceased are Shivappa (75) and Hanumanthappa (35) Three people Shivappa, Hanumanthappa and Siddamma were rushed to McGann in Shivamogga on Saturday as they fell ill after they consumed drinking water supplied through taps by the gram panchayat. Shivappa and Hanumanthappa died on Sunday as they did not respond to the treatment. About 45 others, who fell ill after consuming the contaminated water were treated at private clinics and primya health centres. Twleve of them were shifted to McGann and Subbaiah hospitals in Shivamogga after their condition deteriorated. The gram panchayat authorities have advised villagers to boil the water before drinking.
