Get off Metro, walk into mall 21.8.2014 deccanherald.com
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is planning to replicate the Sampige Metro station model in its Phase II. At the inauguration of the connecting bridge between Sampige Metro station and Mantri Square Mall on Wednesday, BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola said: "This station is one of the most successful examples of Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and it would be replicated in other stations as well in the Namma Metro Phase II." With this connecting bridge, it will be a win-win situation for both Metro and Mantri Mall as the footfall will increase in both the mall and the Metro, he said. The station has been developed by the Mantri Developers but the design and other technical aspects were provided by the BMRCL, he added. Mayor B S Satyanarayana, who inaugurated the facility, requested Mantri Developers to adopt some lakes in the City just as some developers have adopted a few playgrounds. The mayor also asked the BMRCL MD to give similar access to the K R Market Metro ...

Metro won't have exclusive women's coaches for now 21.8.2014 deccanherald.com
Mumbai Metro functioning for barely two months has announced separate coaches for women, commuters on Delhi Metro too get the facility. However, Namma Metro has no such facility for its women commuters. In fact, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has no plans to implement such a facility in the near future. This is despite the two reported cases of molestation and the many unreported incidents of eve-teasing and misbehaviour toward women on board Namma Metro. The BMRCL officials, however, feel differently about their services. They say that since the Namma Metro ridership is too less, women commuters need not stick to one or two coaches and can sit anywhere they want. Officials add that it would inconvenience women commuters if they had to walk through the train to sit in the reserved "women only" seats. Speaking to Deccan Herald, BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola said, "As of now, the ridership is less in both the reaches, Reach 1 from Baiyappanahalli to MG Road and Reach 3 from ...

DDA plans mega projects 21.8.2014 deccanherald.com
A cycle-sharing system in Dwarka, five transit hubs linking all modes of transport, a greenway corridor along the regenerated Barapullah drain and plazas close to upcoming 65 Metro stations are some of the projects that the DDA may undertake in the coming months. These initiatives of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) were firmed up at a review meeting by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, a day after he set the ball rolling on for the process for regularising over 1,600 unauthorised colonies in the city. The land-owning agency, which is controlled by Naidu's ministry, is also looking at promoting commercial activities within 500 metres of Metro stations to help people find employment close to their homes. Five self-sustained sub-cities - with education, health and employment facilities - would also come up to share the load of increasing population in the capital. The proposed cycle-sharing system at Dwarka sub-city in west Delhi would be the country's first such endeavour, said a statement ...

Commuters await the smart move 20.8.2014 Deccan Herald - Supplements
You will soon be able to seamlessly commute by the Metro and BMTC buses across the City. The BMRCL authorities have devised a card to do away with the multiple ticketing system. Currently, people who use a BMRCL smart card, can use it only to travel on the Metro but this new system will allow them to use the same card to hop onto BMTC buses as well. The BMTC launched Metro feeder buses with much fanfare when 'Namma Metro' was launched for public use. The buses were supposed to be stationed at each of the six Metro stations. But today, the feeder buses are seen only on MG Road. All other stations of Phase I, including Byappanahalli, Indiranagar and Halasuru don't have proper feeder bus services. Pradeep Singh Kharola, managing director, BMRCL reasons, "We intend to realign the Metro feeder bus service to the Metro rail. We will soon introduce a smart card that will allow Metro commuters to use the same card for the feeder service as well. But this new card will be operational only after all the stations ...

Does Delhi really have a heart? 20.8.2014 Deccan Herald - New Delhi
Probably one of the most heartening reports readers would have come across recently is that of rail commuters in Perth, Australia, tilting a whole carriage to free a man who had accidentally stuck his leg between the platform edge and the train. A day after the incident took place, on August 6, dailies across the world carried front page pictures of dozens of commuters physically pushing the train sideway after their attempts at extricating the man had failed initially. Befittingly, this incident - a replay of a similar occurrence in Tokyo in 2013 - was hailed as a display of "community work" and "people power". However, if something of this nature had taken place in Delhi, say in our pride of place - the Metro, how do you suppose passengers here would have responded? Our worst fears were confirmed by a Delhi Metro passenger who recently had the misfortune of seeing a man commit suicide on its tracks. Savita Mohanty was present at the Subhash Nagar Metro Station on August 14 when a man jumped on the ...
