Mock drill at Metro stations takes passengers aback 25.3.2017 Deccan Herald - City
Police conducted mock drills for the first time at Metro stations across the city on Saturday to assess their preparedness for untoward incidents and catastrophic events. "Hoax bomb calls, terrorist infiltration or attacks are some of the situations that could arise without any warning and we wanted to know for ourselves how prepared we are," a senior police officer said. The drills were conducted in the morning peak hour without any intimation. Even the officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd were caught unawares as they had been kept out of the loop. Saturday was chosen because the crowd is bigger and the challenge for police stiffer, a source said. Metro was chosen for the drill because of its visibility exposure and connectivity to prominent places in the city. Sniffer dogs, bomb detection and disposal squad, anti-sabotage squad and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) were part of the drill. Many passengers were taken aback by the drill which they thought was either a police operation or an ...

Alleging violation of NGT orders, environmentalists & tabela owners protest against Mumbai metro 25.3.2017 DNA: Urban Tales
Alleging that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) was violating National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders, which restricts any work from being carried out at the Aarey colony, those operating tabelas AT Unit 19 as well as environmentalists held a protest on Friday noon against soil testing machines being deployed. According to Rahil Nandolia, one of the licensees who runs a tabela at Unit number 19 of Aarey Milk Colony and was active in arranging a protest, it was on Thursday night that soil testing machines were brought and set up at Unit number 19 close to Jogeshwari Vikroli Link Road (JVLR). “On Wednesday contractors of MMRCL came to our site and they told us that they have to start work on construction of a ramp. In fact when we informed them about NGT orders prohibiting any work inside Aarey and asked for permission, they told us that they have permissions, we will have to go to MMRCL office to see the documents,” said Nandolia, adding that they were also surprised when the soil testing ...

Trial run on underground Metro in 3 days 24.3.2017 deccanherald.com
Metro trains will start running on the underground section of north-south corridor in three days as the BMRCL heads to the final stages of the trial run to meet the April 15 deadline. BMRCL managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola said French multinational Alstom has finished most of the tests prerequisite for running the trains. "We will start running the train within the next three days," he said, but refused to comment further on the time required for the exercise. According to Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has set April 15 as deadline for operationalisation of the entire Metro Phase 1. However, the deadline seems unrealistic in the face of the time required for trials and the CRS inspection. Senior BMRCL officials said they would take a month to complete the entire test and go for CRS inspection but said the project will meet the "April deadline". "The CRS inspection will not take much time unless there are problems that need to be fixed," they ...

Now, Uber offers last-mile connectivity at Metro stations 24.3.2017 deccanherald.com
Cab aggregator Uber on Friday entered into an agreement with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to provide taxi services from 12 Metro stations in the city, filling the void left by lack of reliable public transport for last-mile connectivity. Uber opened two exclusive booking counters at Byappanahalli, where riders can book taxis without using the Uber app on their mobile. "Together with Namma Metro, Uber will help reduce travel time while contributing to decongesting roads and the parking spaces in Metro stations," said Uber's Bengaluru Managing Director Christian Freese. Uber kiosks can be accessed at Majestic, Mysuru Road, Indiranagar, VIjayanagar, MG Road and Central College among other stations. In February, another cab aggregator, Ola, had struck a deal with BMRCL to set up kiosks at seven Metro stations, including Trinity, Cubbon Park and Yeshwantpur stations. Meanwhile, BMTC Managing Director Ekroop Caur said the corporation will soon increase the feeder services at Metro stations. ...
