Anti-encroachment drives on major Delhi roads from Feb 1: L-G 19.1.2018 General News
Lt Governor Anil Baijal today asked authorities to launch joint drives against encroachment on 29 major roads in Delhi, including the busy stretch from ITO to Vikas Marg, Aurbindo Marg, Kalindi Kunj Road and M B Road, from February 1. The L-G directed the traffic police to ensure strict enforcement of discipline by four-wheeled, goods vehicles and buses in their designated lanes. He also asked the department to publicise its Twitter handle and WhatsApp group to enable residents to register their complaints. The orders were issued at a meeting called to review the progress of removal of encroachment on 29 corridors identified by the Delhi High Court. "Joint drives by traffic police, MCDs and transport department will be launched from Feb 1 to remove encroachment on these road stretches. Initially, the joint drives would be undertaken twice a week in each MCD zone," the L-G office said in a statement. It stated that a minimum of 3-5 kilometres of a road stretch of the 29 .

The Gujarat high court, on Thursday, came down heavily on the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) because of the civic body's poor progress with road repair and resurfacing work. Showing any leniency to AMC, the court said that only those roads which are often used by VIPs on a regular basis have been repaired, implying that the rest lies in negligence. The second division bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Biren Vaishnav was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one Mustak Kadri. The court verbally said, "This is Gujarat and citizens of Ahmedabad expect best services and roads from the corporation. But, the body has failed to meet the expectation." The civic body has been asked to identify the hampered roads and categorise them into three categories: severely damaged, less damaged and damaged roads. Railways Minister Piyush Goyal today said an integrated suburban railway network plan is ready for implementation in Bengaluru provided the Karnataka government agrees to give "land parcels" around the railway stations. Speaking to reporters, Goyal said last year in September he had commissioned a survey by the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) scientist Aditya Sharma, who oversaw its roll-out, said the Prime Ministers's Office (PMO) was behind the project, something which the Delhi government had also envisaged in the past but never executed.
