Iconic South Indian actor Vikram’s son, Dhruv, was arrested early Sunday morning after he rammed his car into three auto rickshaws in Chennai’s Teynampet area. The incident left the rickshaws badly mangled and injured one person. The aspiring actor was taken in by the police and booked under the IPC. According to reports, the three rickshaws were stationary when the car crashed into them. The car sped away after hitting the rickshaws, and didn’t stop despite police efforts. It finally stopped after it sped out of control and hit a wall. The injured person was identified as Kamesh, who is now being treated in a hospital. Dhruv was charged under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). The autorickshaw strike called on Monday turned violent as protestors vandalised 11 ATMS buses and five autorickshaws, besides forcing passengers out of vehicles. The autorickshaw drivers who had called the strike were protesting against alleged harassment by traffic police officials. Their other demands include more autorickshaw stands in the city. In an exemplary show of honesty, an autorickshaw driver returned Rs 3.90 lakh left behind by a passenger. The man was carrying the money for his wife's bypass surgery. The incident took place on Monday morning when the passenger identified as one Dharmnarayan Galot (64) and his wife Premlata native of Rajasthan took an autorickshaw from Ranip Bus station to Sal hospital located in Vastrapur area. Galot left his bag of cash on the seat of the vehicle when he reached his destination. Meanwhile, the autorickshaw driver Nanjibhai Nai (52), a resident of Ranip, saw the bag on the seat when he was about to take another passenger. He opened the bag to find clothes and money inside. He immediately took a U-turn and went to Sal hospital where he had dropped off Galot and his wife. In an unfortunate incident, a 31-year-old man died while two others including one woman received injuries after a tree fell on an auto-rickshaw in which they were traveling in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. PIL in Gujarat High Court seeks ban on diesel vehicles, non-CNG auto-rickshaws 12.7.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Gujarat high court seeking ban on diesel vehicles and auto-rickshaws that run on petrol in the state, citing the rising pollution levels in the region. The petition was filed by NGO Paryavaran Mitra. The court has issued a notice to the secretary, road transport commissioner and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) in this connection. The petition has sought a ban on BS I and BS II auto-rickshaws, allowing only BS IV CNG-run auto-rickshaws to ply on city roads. It has also sought ban on diesel goods carriers such as chakdas. The petitioner stated that though 65% of the auto-rickshaws in the city were CNG vehicles, 35% still used petrol and most of them were over 10 years old. According to the PIL, diesel vehicles older than a decade should be scrapped and the owners should be provided subsidy to purchase CNG vehicles.
