Air pollution is a significant contributor to increasing cases of heart attack in the city. According to Dr C N Manjunath, director and head of cardiology, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, around 20% of the heart attack cases admitted to the ICU at the institute are caused due to air pollution. "Most of the patients with heart attacks caused due to air pollution are drivers," he added. The prevalence of heart attacks among drivers has led the institute to pursue a study that will involve 500 autorickshaw drivers and traffic policemen. He added that certain particulate matter present in the patients' blood vessels could damage them. "Toxic gases such as sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, ozone among others are present in the air. This is mainly due to vehicle exhaust," said Dr Adil Sadiq, head of cardiothoracic surgery and senior consultant cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, Sakra World Hospital. However, if tackling the unending traffic jams was not enough, relentless honking by drivers is adding to the stress level of pedestrians and those on the road. Puneeth Jagadeesh, an IT professional, says that he has witnessed many situations where people constantly honk at fellow travellers, especially at the traffic signals. "Vehicles which are in front tend to be the victims of honking. This happens mostly when the engine gets turned off and the driver takes time to start it. Usually, this happens with old vehicles. People need to be patient and should respect fellow travellers." Honking in front of hospitals and schools is banned but the concept doesn't seem to be followed by many. Jaipur Traffic Police has made arrangements for those who will be taking a tour of the city to witness the decoration and spirit of Diwali festival till Friday. Separate routes have been marked for those in vehicles and for those who are on foot. Entrance into the Walled City is only allowed through Sanganeri Gate, Ajmeri Gate and Ghat Gate. Exit is only possible from Chaura Rasta via New Gate and from Sanjay Circle via Sansarchandra Road. No vehicles are permitted in Bapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar, and Indira Bazaar.
