Change approach to fix road-flooding, say experts 17.8.2017 deccanherald.com
Stumped by Monday nights torrential downpour that trapped thousands in flooded roads and layouts, Bengalureans are scared of a repeat disaster. Old, quickfix solutions will not save the city from another catastrophic crisis, warn urban environment architects. They have now offered an alternative agenda, a total overhaul of the citys flood management system. Moving away from what they call Business As Usual models, environment architect Mohan Rao and civic evangelist V Ravichander have suggested alternatives to tackle flooding of road networks, inundation and pollution of lakes and more. Flooding of roads Re-linking fragmented storm water drains (SWDs) and clearing them have been the standard response by BBMP to tackle road-flooding so far. But this has not worked because longer duration rainfall generates very high intensity of water, much beyond the designed capacity of SWDs. The alternative: Adaptive designs for traffic islands and medians to perform functions of swales apart from increasing the ...

School buses add to South Mumbai parking woes 17.8.2017 DNA: Urban Tales
If parking problems in South Mumbai weren’t bad enough already, school and private buses are being illegally parked on its roads over the past few days. This has happened after the Traffic police banned plying of buses during peak hours from April.  Moreover, schools have also refused to provide parking lots. Some of the areas where these buses are parked are Fort, Tardeo, Mazgaon, and Byculla. There are nearly 1,000-odd buses parked at many places on the roads across South and Central Mumbai. These buses block a majority of the road, thereby lessening the space for vehicular traffic. “Many private buses are forced to park on roads. These are the ones that ply for schools and private offices,” said Harsh Kotak, member, Mumbai Bus Malak Sangh. Meanwhile, most schools have informed the school bus association and the state government that they do not have parking space inside their premises. Sources said that these buses are parked after people and school children are dropped off. Apart from locations in ...
