Zaveri Bazar building crash toll rises to four 17.12.2017 DNA: Money
The death toll in the Zaveri Bazaar building collapse touched four on Saturday, with rescuers pulling the body of a 50-year-old man, who was later identified as Barkat Ali Khan, from under the rubble.  Officials also said that the operation at the crash site was over. Five-storeyed Chhipi Chawl, a MHADA building, was under repairs when the mishap occurred on Friday. All four victims were labourers who were carrying out the repairs. Dyaneshwar Chavan, deputy commissioner of police zone II,  said firefighters had tough time negotiating through the narrow access to the mishap spot. “We will investigate with MHADA for the cause of collapse,” he said. Pubs and bars operating without trade licences at residential areas in Indiranagar will be evicted soon. The BBMP has directed its officials in the east zone to slap notices on commercial establishments functioning in residential areas, many of which operate openly or without name boards. With the BBMP struggling to implement the high court direction to clear commercial activities from residential areas, its joint commissioner, east zone, Dr Ashok on Saturday met residents of Indiranagar at Mayo Hall. He directed Dr Siddappaji, health officer (east), and Sanamitra, medical officer of health, CV Raman Nagar, to slap notices on the illegal establishments disturbing the residents. Dr Ashok said he would go on an inspection in Indiranagar on December 22 and will immediately close bars and pubs functioning in residential blocks without a trade licence. The city police on Friday arrested the man who killed the owner of a paying guest accommodation in Mico Layout on December 12. Shivashankar (29), a native of Madhubani in Bihar, was picked up from Ludhiana, Punjab. Giving a statement to the police, Shivashankar said he used to watch the detective series, CID, from where he got the idea for the killing. Shivashankar had made away with Rs 2 lakh that the owner, Thirupal Reddy, had collected as rent. According to the police, Shivashankar was employed as a cook at the PG for the past six months and stayed with Reddy in the same building. The accused had switched off the CCTV camera before murdering Reddy, they said. Later, he broke open the almirah and stole the money. His exit from the building was recorded on a CCTV camera at a nearby building. The police accessed his call records and traced him to a PG in Ludhiana.
