Following the death of a 26-year-old-youth in police custody last month in Sangli district, the Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) office has issued a circular recently advising police officers to use scientific and forensic methods for interrogation and has urged the force to shun the use of third-degree torture in police custody. So far 12 cases of custodial deaths have been reported in the state this year. On November 8, Aniket Ashok Kothale, who was arrested on charges of robbery by Sangli district police, was allegedly beaten to death while in custody by five policemen including a police sub-inspector (PSI). Reports suggest that his body was burnt in Amboli Ghat to destroy evidence in Amboli Ghat.  The cops, however, claimed that the youth had fled from custody. After much hue and cry the five cops were suspended, and the state government transferred the senior cops out of Sangli district to avoid further flak. The traffic police are on the lookout for the owner of an Uber cab that caused an accident on the elevated expressway in South Bengalurus Hosur Road on October 14, killing two people instantly.

Suresh A, of Vellore, got his 20-year-old friend, Saravanan, to drive the cab though he didnt have a driving licence. Saravanan drove so rashly that two people - brothers-in-law - were thrown off the flyover.

The jurisdictional Madiwala traffic police had arrested Saravanan immediately after the accident. He is still in judicial custody as his bail application was rejected by the court. He and Suresh have been booked for causing death due to negligence as well as rash and reckless driving.

She was produced before a local court and has been sent to two-day police custody.  According to reports, Savita killed her husband Sahdev way back in 2004, after being found in a compromising position with her lover Kamlesh. Savita and Kamlesh allegedly colluded and stoned Sahdev to death. In order to hush up the entire incident, the body was buried inside the septic tank and it was later sealed with cement.
