Desilting of Water Bodies 22.3.2018 Govt of india: PIB
De-siltation of water bodies and dams is prime responsibility of owners of water bodies and dam owners who are generally State Governments or Central PSUs like BBMB, NHPC etc.  In order to supplement the efforts of the State Governments, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR) provides technical and financial assistance to encourage sustainable development and efficient management of water resources through various schemes and programmes such as Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of water bodies scheme and Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Programme (DRIP).

District in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj instructed the officials to immediately execute all the pending proposed construction works. Speaking at the engineers meet held at taluk panchayat, recently, the minister said, "In Udupi assembly constituency, as many as 4,481 works are taken up at a cost of Rs 515.80 crore from May 8, 2013 to December 20, 2017. The proposed works should be completed as the poll code of conduct would be imposed shortly." Of the total proposed works, 453 construction works are in progress which are taken up at the cost of Rs 139.40 crore. Rs 424 works are approved for the cost of Rs 163.27 crore and would be taken up shortly. The number of completed works include, 2,695 road works, 10 bridges, 137 structures, 21 vented dams, 14 de-silting works of the ponds, 43 school buildings, 1,099 irrigation related projects, 176 sea walls and 26 works for developing infrastructural facilities at Malpe shore, five fisheries jetty are among others. Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that the proposal to draw water from Lakhya Dam built by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) at Kudremukh has been dropped. Speaking at the council meeting here on Saturday he said that the Supreme Court had not permitted the Mangaluru City Corporation to pump water from the dam. As the pipelines are filled with silt, the required quantity of water could not be drawn from the dam.
