With the Cauvery in spate following heavy discharge from Mettur dam, the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday said district administrations concerned were taking all safety measures in the wake of the alert issued by CWC. Talking to reporters here, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister R B Udayakumar said, "There is a ban on visiting places prone to flooding. People are advised not to indulge in activities such as taking selfies, fishing, swimming and other recreational activities." "District administrations concerned have been taking safety measures based on an alert issued by Central Water Commission (CWC) on August 9," he said. Evacuation of people from lowlying areas among other steps are being taken up by respective district officials, the minister said adding that revenue, disaster management and district officials are on high alert. A flood alert was issued along the banks of Cauvery in six Tamil Nadu districts today with Karnataka releasing more than one lakh cusecs of water into the inter-state river in the wake of heavy rains there, officials said today. The alert was issued a day after the Central Water Commission (CWC) gave the first advisory warning, saying combined discharge of water (more than one lakh cusecs) from Kabani and KRS dams in Karnataka was expected to reach Mettur Dam in Salem district of Tamil Nadu by tomorrow. "Suitable precautionary steps may be taken and downstream areas informed of the (water) release", the advisory issued by CWC's Southern Rivers Division. Accordingly, the collectors of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Tiruchirapalli and Thanjavur districts gave the flood alert asking people living along the banks of the river, particularly those in low lying areas, to move to safer places in case of flood, official sources said. A mild tremor with a magnitude of 3.3 was experienced today in various parts of Salem district, about 120 km from here, triggering panic among people who rushed out of their homes. However, no damage was reported, district officials said. The tremor was felt at Thivattipatti, Ammapettai, Omalur, Tharamangalam and Kannangurichi for a few seconds around 7.50 AM, they said.
