Govt asks DCs for final settlement of Hirakud land oustees 30.5.2018 General News
Odisha Government has asked the district collectors of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Sonepur to take steps for final land settlement of the Hirakud land oustees by June 30. Principal Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management department, C S Kumar has written a letter to the district collector of Jharsuguda in this regard and forwarded copies of to the collectors of Sambalpur, Bargarh and Sonepur districts for appropriate steps. The matter has to be resolved through field enquiry and concerned officials conducting enquiry shall not exclusively depend on relevant documents, the letter said. More than 200 villages were submerged due to the construction of Hirakud Dam and around 22,000 families were affected, while about 19,000 families were displaced. However, the government provided 287.14 acres homestead and 8468 acres agricultural land to only 2243 families, sources said. No step was taken for rehabilitation of the remaining affected people. Saon canal embankment breaches at Pondripali village 7.4.2018 General News
The embankment of the Saon canal under the Hirakud reservoir has been breached at Pondripali village flooding land under Rengali block of Sambalpur district, officials said. The 15-feet breach developed yesterday while 630 cusec water was released from the canal, they said. "The earthen embankment has become old and it was weak at Paandripali. However, we have stopped release of water. The repair work has begun," said assistant engineer of the water resource department J K Bariha. The Sub-Collector Pradeep Sahu, who visited the spot, said "the farm land has not been affected due to the breach. The water flowed through forest land. The restoration work has already begun. The breach will be repaired soon." Earlier on February 11, a 40-feet breach had developed in the embankment of Sason canal at Khejurbandh village under the Kilasama Gram Panchayat in the district, damaging standing crop over a large tract of land, officials said.

Embankment of canal caves in, damages crops 11.2.2018 General News
A breach in the embankment of a canal in Odisha's Sambalpur district today caused damage to standing crops in several villages. The 40-feet breach has developed in the embankment of Sason canal in Khejurbandh under the Kilasama Gram Panchayat in the district, officials said adding crops were submerged particylarly in Balbaspur and Kilasama. According to the villagers, the embankment of the canal in the Hirakud dam circle gave way in the early hours today. "We have already informed the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) about the loss caused due to the breach. The loss will be assessed after the water recedes," said Sambalpur Sadar Sub Collector, Pradeep Sahu. According to Superintending Engineer, Hirakud Dam Circle, Saroj Panda, the toe wall of the embankment had become old and it probably failed to retain the embankment leading to the breach. Both the sluice gates of the canal have now been closed and repair work has begun, he said adding the repair work ..
