After aggressively advocating interlinking of rivers for years, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday remarked that it was only a "temporary phenomenon", but revival of rivers was the permanent solution. "I was instrumental for linking of rivers in the country and prevailed upon (then Prime Minister) Vajpayee. But linking of rivers is only a temporary phenomenon and reviving them is the permanent solution," Chandrababu said while addressing a Rally for Rivers campaign here today. Chandrababu said he had to go for interlinking of rivers as he had to do something for immediate solution also. "Otherwise, we won't be in power for doing the right things also for a long time," he added and took credit for "linking" of rivers Godavari and Krishna in Andhra Pradesh. Setting a three-month deadline to kick-start river interlinking projects, Road Transport and Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari has said three of the projects are ready for execution. At the annual general meeting of the National Water Development Agency Society, Gadkari said the three projects — Ken-Betwa linking in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Damanganga-Pinjal Link in Maharashtra and Par-Tapi-Narmada linking in Maharashtra and Gujarat — will be taken up in the first phase. The projects are ready for approval and ways to raise funds will be explored he said. The projects would cost around Rs 35,000 crore. A meeting of chief ministers concerned will be convened to sort out inter-state issues so that the three projects could begin in the next three months, the minister said. Newly-minted Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari on Friday announced a central grant of between Rs 55,000 crore and Rs 60,000 crore over the next two years for Maharashtra to complete irrigation projects, adding the state can increase its irrigated land percentage from 22 per cent to 40 per cent in that period. He also announced that India’s first river-linking project will be executed between Maharashtra and Gujarat.
