Digvijaya flags concerns over proposed nuke power plant in MP 20.2.2018 General News
Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh today requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the decision to set up a 1400 MW nuclear power plant in tribal-dominated Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. In his letter addressed to the prime minister and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the AICC general secretary said the proposed 1400 MW Chutka nuke project will affect the conservation as well as bio-diversity of the Narmada river. "The Narmada river is a lifeline of tribals living for ages in Mandla district as they earn their livelihood by fishing," Singh, currently on "Narmada Parikrama", wrote in the letter. "Since the last four months of my Narmada Parikrama (circumambulation), I found that the river area is shrinking and getting polluted. In such situation, establishing a nuclear power plant would not only destroy bio-diversity of the Narmada river, but would also prove disastrous for this water body," he stated. Singh claimed a total of 606 .

Congress veteran Digvijay Singh, who is on 'Narmada Parikrama' yatra since the last four months, is worried about the plight of the revered river due to illegal sand mining, and wants urgent measures to ensure its revival. The 70-year-old former Chief Minister and his wife Amrita started 'parikrama' (circumambulation ) of the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh as a "religious and spiritual" exercise. Singh said the Narmada is the "oldest" river in India and advocated its revival. "Rampant illegal sand mining with machines is being done in the river. Roads have been built in the bed of the river," he told PTI. To back his claim, Singh pointed at temporary roads that have come up for sand excavation in the Narmada at Babri area in Narsullaganj tehsil of the Budhni constituency represented by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. "Such is the worrisome condition of Narmada - the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh," he said. "The flow of the Narmada is much reduced. Water from the ...
