PM Narendra Modi consistently ignoring Kerala and its demands: Pinarayi Vijayan 23.6.2018 DNA: Popular News
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of consistently ignoring Kerala and its demands. Vijayan's, who was on Friday denied permission to meet the prime minister, also alleged the Centre was not paying heed to the country's federal structure. The PM has been ignoring Kerala. The Centre's aversion to Kerala's demands is leading to the collapse of several industries in the state. When we needed to see the PM and submit our requests, we were not allowed to do so, Vijayan said. "We need a satisfied state and a strong Centre in the federal system," Vijayan said, adding that the response of the previous governments to the state's demands was not as bad as it was now. For instance, in the case of the Kanjikode rail coach factory, our requests were completely ignored. The Centre's involvement must indicate a basic understanding of the federal system and the states' needs. Unfortunately, the central government does not recognise this need. The previous governments ...

Australia: Indian-origin woman, ex-lover jailed for over 20 years for poisoning husband with cyanide-laced juice 22.6.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
An Indian-origin woman and her ex-lover have been jailed for more than 20 years by an Australian court here for fatally poisoning her husband with cyanide-laced orange juice. Sofia Sam, 34, and Arun Kamalasanan, 36, both from Kerala, were in February found guilty of murdering Sofia's husband Sam Abraham at his home in Epping in Melbourne in October 2015, Australian news agency AAP reported. Australian Supreme Court yesterday jailed Arun, deemed the "architect" of the poison plot, for 27 years and Sam for 22 years. Sofia's husband, 33, was found dead in his pyjamas and foaming at the mouth and was initially thought to have suffered a heart attack. But an autopsy later revealed he died of cyanide poisoning, and after a lengthy police operation Arun and Sam were charged, tried and found guilty. "This is a very serious example of the crime of murder," Justice Paul Coghlan said while announcing the sentence. "Sam Abraham was a young man asleep in bed at home with his family when he was killed by the use of ...

IPL spot-fixing: Supreme Court gives deadline to Delhi High Court, wants decision on discharge of S Sreesanth 15.5.2018 DNA: Mumbai
The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Delhi High Court to decide by July end the appeal challenging a trial court order discharging several cricketers, including S Sreesanth, in the sensational IPL spot-fixing case. Sreesanth, who has been awarded life ban by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has filed an appeal in the apex court challenging the Kerala High Court decision upholding the ban on him. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it understood the "anxiety" of the cricketer to play cricket but would like to wait for the high court's decision on the appeal of Delhi Police challenging the trial court order discharging the cricketers and others in the IPL spot-fixing case. Sreesanth has sought an interim direction that he should be allowed to play the English County cricket in the view of the fact that he has already been discharged in the IPL spot-fixing case and has been suffering the ban for the past four years. The Delhi Police had arrested Indian paceman Sreesanth and ...
