On December 31 2020, the newsrack service will be shut down permanently.

It has been a nice long run from the Sarai days in 2004 to being hosted on its own domain around 2006. Beside maintenance, there has been no real active development on the code or the features since early 2008. Since 2015, even all that maintenance was pretty bare bones. A lot of news sources no longer provide reliable RSS feeds and since mid 2018, there were growing issues with the service and I only kept it alive to assist a handful of users.

So, it is time to shut this down. The internet world in 2020 is vastly differently from 2003 when I first conceptualized this service. Thanks for using this all these years.

Any ID proof sufficient for new SIM but Aadhaar linkage must later: Sources 2.5.2018 General News
Telecom operators can issue new SIM cards on the basis of any identity document like election voter ID or driving licence but the requirement to link mobile number with Aadhaar at a later date has not been done away with, sources said today. When contacted, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said there is no change in the prevalent rules that mobile phone companies cannot deny anyone a new SIM card for want of Aadhaar, and can use alternative identification documents for the purpose. She, however, said the government will await a verdict of the Supreme Court on the requirement to verify the SIM by linking it with biometric 12-digit Aadhaar number. Separately, sources with direct knowledge of the matter said the SIM-Aadhaar linking policy still stands as on date and so new SIMs issued without Aadhaar would need to be re-verified through Aadhaar-based eKYC at a later date. Similarly, subscribers who give Aadhaar right at the time of new SIM issuance, would not need to undergo for ...

SC does not seem to agree with Aadhaar law being termed a Money Bill 2.5.2018 General News
The Supreme Court today did not seem to agree with the government's contention that the Aadhaar law was correctly termed as a Money Bill by the Lok Sabha Speaker as it dealt with "targeted delivery of subsidies" for which funds come from the Consolidated Fund of India. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Dipak Misra referred to Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act which says that "State or any body corporate or person" can use Aadhaar number "for establishing identity of an individual for any purpose". "The problem arises with regard to section 57 (of the Aadhaar Act). Section 57 snapped the link with section 7 and the targeted delivery of subsidies, benefits and services," the bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, said. The bench said allowing "any body corporate or person" to use Aadhaar for establishing identity for any purpose "snaps the link with Consolidated Fund of India", indicating that the Aadhaar legislation cannot be ..

Telecom sector to get ombudsman to handle consumer grievances 1.5.2018 General News
In a move aimed at empowering mobile consumers, the Telecom Commission today cleared a proposal for creation of an ombudsman under the sector regulator to resolve subscriber complaints. The apex decision making body of the telecom ministry said necessary amendments will be initiated in TRAI Act for effective enforcement of the new complaint redressal mechanism. Besides the present mechanism of registering complaint with telecom operators, consumers can now approach consumer courts seeking relief for their grievances and thereafter also approach the proposed ombudsman for redressal of their complaints, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan told reporters. "Grievance redressal in the telecom sector has been a long-pending demand and a lot of the Parliamentary Standing committees have also raised this issue...We get 10 million grievances and complaints per quarter. "The current mechanism is that the operators have a mechanism internally to deal with complaints and after that it comes to ..

PAN-Aadhaar linkage does not help curb scams: Lawyer to SC 26.4.2018 General News
A lawyer today opposed the seeding of Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) for income tax in the Supreme Court, saying in no way does it help in preventing financial frauds or curb black money. Arguing before a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, which is hearing a clutch of petitions challenging Aadhaar and its enabling 2016 law, the lawyer referred to various recent financial frauds including the Nirav Modi scam and said none of these could have been avoided by using PAN-Aadhaar linkage. "Firstly, giant corporates, rather than individual players, have been the main actors in these scams. Secondly, black money is widely known to be stored by the corrupt in foreign banks which are beyond the reach of Aadhaar," lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing NGO 'Centre for Civil Society', said. However, the Supreme Court did not agree with his submission that Aadhaar was voluntary and said if a person wanted to avail subsidy benefits, then he or ..
