The Paris-based inter-governmental International Energy Agency has in its latest report indicated a decline in investment in the oil and gas sector for a second year and increase in energy efficiency and energy networks. Edited excerpts:While investment in electricity is more than in oil & gas, it has contrasting trends. Would renewables fuel its growth?Investment in electricity declined by one per cent in 2016 but it looks more because the investment in hydrocarbons came down. The investment is more towards the low carbon side, clean power and networks. By and large, coal power is still the third largest in investment after solar and wind. SHILLONG, July 18: Moving towards the early implementation of the highly anticipated Mawphu Hydro Electric Project – Stage II, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) has stated that a social impact assessment of the said project will be conducted at the earliest.
“For the social impact assessment there will be some procedure which will be taken care through the state government,” NEEPCO general manager NK Mao informed here on Tuesday.

VM Khokale, Chief Engineer of Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) at Koyana Hydro Power Plant (Pophali), has been suspended for posting an obscene photograph on an official WhatsApp group. Bipin Shrimali, President and CEO of Mahagenco, had passed the suspension order of Khokale on Saturday, a copy of which is in DNA's possession. "Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule along with his department officials is also a member of our WhatsApp group where the suspended official had posted the obscene photograph on July 14," stated the order. Senior government officials from the energy department said that the group was formed to communicate and address the day-today issues related to power generation and distribution. "As per the suspension order, the conduct of Khokale is not appropriate and against the rule book; so he was immediately suspended as per 2015 Service Act.
