Government's UDAY scheme has helped debt laden DISCOMs of 24 states to reduce losses to Rs 36,905 crore in 2016-17 from Rs 51,590 crore in the previous fiscal, Parliament was informed today. "As per data furnished by the states, the aggregate net losses of DISCOMs participating in UDAY have come down from Rs 51,590 crore in 2015-16 to Rs 36,905 crore in 2016-17," Power Minister R K Singh said in written reply to Lok Sabha. The Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) was launched for the operational and financial turnaround of state-owned Power Distribution Companies (DISCOMs). The scheme aims to reduce interest burden, cost of power and power losses in distribution sector, besides improving operational efficiency of DISCOMs. The minister said the interventions under UDAY have yielded encouraging results. The participating states have achieved an improvement of one per cent in Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C or distribution) losses and Rs 0.17 a Unit in the gap

Visibly worried over soaring costs of inputs, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) is contemplating a second caustic soda plant within the planned PCPIR (petroleum, chemicals & petrochemicals investment region) hub at Paradip.Nalco already has a joint venture with Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd, a Gujarat government company, to set up a caustic soda plant at Dahej with a cost of Rs 1800 crore. Hit by gross mismatch in supply and demand for nearly a decade now leading to poor capacity utilisation of less than 70 per cent, the sector growth has remained stunt at lower digit growth trajectory.Now, despite government's impetus on infrastructure development, the sector may face pressure on its profitability given the rising costs of input materials and capacity utilisation will hover around 65 per cent, says a report from rating agency ICRA.According to the report, the cement makers have witnessed rising energy and freight costs on the back of higher prices of pet coke, coal and diesel during the first half of 2017-18.
