In a fresh twist into the impasse over the panchayat polls, the West Bengal State Election Commission (WBSEC) is learnt to have kept the doors of a legal battle open. According to sources, state election commissioner Mira Pande and secretary Tapas Roy held two rounds of meetings with Samaraditya Pal, an eminent barrister, to consult the legal options. Mr Pal earlier represented the Tatas in the Singur case at the Calcutta high court which ruled against the Mamata Banerjee government. Sources revealed that the first meeting was held on Thursday while the second on Friday morning. The issue of discussion has so far been focused on finding the scopes about the deployment of the Central para-military forces during the elections. In case the state government sticks to the stand of holding the elections without the Central forces, the poll body may weigh an option to move the Calcutta high court challenging their decision, an official hinted.
