Global growth showing solid momentum: WB chief 19.4.2018 General News
With global growth showing solid momentum, the challenge is to make it inclusive, World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim said today. "The challenge now is to ensure that strong growth will translate into inclusive growth, so that the benefits of global economic integration are enjoyed by all members of society," Kim said at the start of the annual spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. "The global economy is showing solid momentum. We're expecting global growth to edge up to 3.1 per cent in 2018 its strongest performance since 2011 as the recovery in investment, manufacturing, and trade continues, and as commodity-exporting developing economies benefit from firming commodity prices," Kim said here. Kim said this period of robust growth is a great opportunity to invest in human and physical capital. Filling infrastructure gaps, improving education and health outcomes, and increasing female labour force participation could continue to drive growth. If policy ...

NASA's planet hunting probe successfully launched 19.4.2018 General News
NASA's latest planet hunting satellite was successfully launched today on the first-of-its-kind mission to find new worlds beyond our solar system and identify the ones that could support alien life. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which is expected to find thousands of new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, lifted off at 4:21 am IST today on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The twin solar arrays that will power the spacecraft were successfully deployed soon after. "We are thrilled TESS is on its way to help us discover worlds we have yet to imagine, worlds that could possibly be habitable, or harbour life," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "With missions like the James Webb Space Telescope to help us study the details of these planets, we are ever the closer to discovering whether we are alone in the universe," said Zurbuchen. World's largest superconducting camera can spot nearby exoplanets 18.4.2018 General News
Scientists have developed the world's largest superconducting camera that can spot planets around stars near our solar system. Distinguishing that planet's light from its star can be problematic, researchers said. The team from California Institute of Technology and Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US created a device named DARKNESS (the DARK-speckle Near-infrared Energy-resolved Superconducting Spectrophotometer), the first 10,000-pixel integral field spectrograph designed to overcome the limitations of traditional semiconductor detectors. It employs Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors that, in conjunction with a large telescope and an adaptive optics system, enable direct imaging of planets around nearby stars. "Taking a picture of an exoplanet is extremely challenging because the star is much brighter than the planet, and the planet is very close to the star," said Benjamin Mazin, from University of California, Santa Barbara in the US. DARKNESS is an attempt to overcome some of .
