Footwear, biodiesel to be assigned GST rates on June 3 24.5.2017 deccanherald.com
Apart from gold, textile and beedi, GST Council on its June 3 meeting will set rates for footwear, agriculture implements and biodiesel. Gold appears to be the major bone of contention. States like Kerala want to cap it at 5%, but Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu want it even lower. While the Centre believes that too high a rate on gold could lead to smuggling, jewellery making hubs like Maharashtra and Gujarat are of the opinion that even at 5%, jewellery making could be costlier. The government also believes that a lower rate will bring more people into the organised segment. The total gold holdings with private households and individuals in India is around 22,500 tonne. Currently, gold jewellery attracts an excise duty of 1%, without a central value-added tax or CENVAT credit. On refined gold bars, the government levies a 9.5% excise duty. The council, which decided on tax rates for 1,211 goods and services in its Srinagar meeting, could not build a consensus on rates for gold as there happened to ...

Govt to decide textile GST rates on June 3 22.5.2017 Deccan Herald - Business
As the GST Council reaches closer to fixing tax rates for textiles, the Textile Ministry has hoped it will take care of the interests of the industry which has just started looking up and employs a large number of people only next to agriculture.

"It is the right and privilege of the GST Council to take a decision on rates. I hope they will take into cognizance all concerns," Textile Minister Smriti Irani told reporters here to a specific query on GST.

While the GST Council has fixed levies for most of the goods and services under the proposed GST regime, a call on some of them is still awaited.

Prominent amongst the goods on which the decision is pending to be taken on June 3 is gold and other precious metals, textiles and beedi.

The council was unable to take a decision on textiles in its Srinagar meeting this weekend. Many a textile trader are demanding a fibre-neutral taxation regime for textiles.

No need for local partners, global firms can now bid in tobacco auctions 22.5.2017 All Markets Stories
Hyderabad, 22 May: Government of India has decided to allow global companies to directly participate in the tobacco auctions. The move is expected to increase the competition at the auction platforms in major FCV tobacco centers like Guntur in Andhra Pradesh where the tobacco growers faced a serious crisis due to the fall in prices a couple of years ago. With this decision, global companies do not have to depend any more on a local partner or a local agent to buy tobacco leaf from India. The government's decision covers a substantial portion of tobacco trade in India as 70 percent of the FCV(Flu Cured Virginia Tobacco ) is exported to other countries while the remaining 30 percent is purchased by the Indian cigarette manufactures. Last year the country had sold 230 million kgs of FCV tobacco valued Rs 5,950 crore in the export markets, according to the Tobacco Board officials. Tobacco exports have seen a marginal decline this year."There is a 4 percent decline in exports this year ...
