Startup has solution for sewer deaths 19.11.2017 DNA: Mumbai
The practice of manual scavenging is banned in India since 1993 and yet over 126 people have lost their lives cleaning sewers and septic tanks since January this year alone. Despite the laws and Supreme Court interventions, manual scavenging continues. However, 25 years after the ban came into force, eight young engineers — all founders of a Kerala-based startup Genrobotics — are working with Kerala government to put an end to the practice. "We were approached by the state IT Secretary M Sivasankar seeking our assistance in combating the problem through technology. The idea is to replace the term manhole with robothole so that no human life is lost doing this undignified task," says Vimal Govind, 23, a founding-member of Genrobotics. India rejects UN official's criticism of sanitation drive 12.11.2017 Deccan Herald - Breaking News Rss Feeds
The Indian government has rejected criticism of its ambitious sanitation programme by a United Nations official who said lower caste communities had their rights violated by being left to clean toilets built in a nationwide drive. The main aim is to eliminate open defecation by October 2019 by building individual and public toilets. But activists say the campaign has failed to end the practice of manual scavenging, or clearing faeces by hand, and has even exa

Dowry menace still prevalent in every community: Meera Saxena 28.10.2017 deccanherald.com
"Number of foeticides, especially female foeticides, have been increasing day-by-day and most of those involving in such heinous crime are the families of the victim. The menace of dowry is prevalent in every community and this is a big torture for women", lamented State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Meera Saxena. Speaking at a programme organised to inaugurate the district unit of Human Rights Protection & Corruption Eradication Bureau, at Parijat Kalyan Mantap in Hiriyur in Chitradurga district on Friday evening, she said that each one of us have the right to live. But practices like child labour, prostitution, human trafficking, Devadasi, manual scavenging and the like question the right to live.
