Paschimavahini project gets Cabinet nod 11.12.2017 Deccan Herald - News

The State Cabinet on Monday cleared the Paschimavahini project that proposes to build check-dams along west flowing rivers to meet the drinking water needs of the three coastal districts.

The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 1,394 crore of which Rs 200 crore for the first phase was approved by the cabinet.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said the project will meet the drinking water needs of 19 assembly constituencies in the districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi especially in January-April.

Jayachandra said the project will also serve as a consolation to the people of coastal districts who were apprehensive that the Yettinahole project will divert their share of water to the districts of Tumkuru and Kolar.

Underground water levels drop beyond 700 ft in DK district 7.12.2017 Deccan Herald - State
Though Dakshina Kannada (DK) in Karnataka is a district that gets an average of 3400 mm rainfall every monsoon, the underground water levels in the district have fallen by a record 700 feet this year.

Most of the rain water has flowed away into the sea and underwater levels in Belthangadi and Puttur taluks have sunk beyond 700 feet.

Because the sinking of the underground water table was noticed last year, a ban on digging new bore-wells was imposed and the rule was followed diligently by DK farmers. Yet the situation seems to have worsened.

Now the district administration has taken up measures to build check dams to stop the wastage of rain water and enrich the underground water levels.
