Gujarat govt launches 'zero waste' policy 27.7.2018 DNA: India
Gujarat government has launched a policy with the aim to make all civic bodies "zero-waste" cities in the state. The policy was launched on Thursday after the chief minister approved the same. The policy gives power to each of the civic bodies to frame their individual laws to act against individuals or organisations committing erratic disposal of waste. The policy's main focus is over 100% segregation of waste, recycling and systematic disposal of the same. The policy also aims to ensure toilets for each household, manual scavenging-free societies, disposal of sewerage water after treatment and providing additional funds to civic bodies for the same. The policy has set ten goals to make all cities free from waste. It mentions: "All cities should be zero-waste cities and for that, 100% waste from residential, industrial and commercial areas is to be collected and stored after segregation. Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 9 The Central Government’s “Technology Challenge”, contest which aims for innovative technology-driven solutions for cleaning of sewers and septic tanks has received a positive start. Students of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Udham Singh Nagar, through its Atal Tinkering Lab, have made a prototype of robotic machine that can be sent into sewers for cleaning and removing blockages. Termed “Smart Sewage Shooter”, the machine is water-proof and can be controlled entirely from outside. The machine is equipped with a cutter, cameras and lights. A variety of ‘changeable cutters’ with varying strength as well as diameter can be fitted. The cutter attached with a motor also churns sewage to clear the blockage. Moreover, the machine can release chemicals, including sodium formalin, chloroform to dilute sewage and clear blockage. Comptroller and Auditor General of India and former IAS officer of Rajastahn Cadre Rajiv Mehrishi set up an example for the bureaucracy when on Thursday he emptied a toilet pit from a twin pit toilet in rural Maharashtra. In this tasks he was joined by secretary in the ministry of drinking water and sanitation Parameswaran Iyer. The pit-cleaning exercise was conducted at Pandharewadi gram panchayat in Daund block of the Pune district. The exercise was basically a step towards dispelling myths, biases and stigmas and setting a precedent that officers who advocate for sanitation and hygiene should practice the same.
