Cod, plaice migrate to cooler waters
|
25.9.2019 |
|
France: Cod, sole and plaice might be regulars on European dinner tables but as climate change heats the oceans common species are heading to cooler northern waters, with profound potential consequences for fish stocks and consumers.
Experts say bluefin tuna, seahorse and the bright triggerfish from the tropics are swimming to Europe's warming seas while fish such as cod are migrating northwards. "We will see less of the fish we know, and we will see tropical fish arriving that we did not know (here) until now," said Clara Ulrich, a fisheries scientist and assistant director at the French Research Institute for Exploration of the Sea.
She said the bluefin tuna is returning to the North Sea and said seahorse and balistes, a tropical fish seen in hot areas, are arriving in European waters. Ulrich explained it is not that species such as cod have disappeared from European waters but there will be less of them along the French and Spanish coasts and more of them in colder climates such as in ... |

Leaders meet as troubles mount
|
25.9.2019 |
|
United Nations: Navigating a troubled era's choppy waters, world leaders gather for their annual meeting at the United Nations on Tuesday to grapple with climate change, regional conflicts and a dispute in the Middle East that could ripple across the entire planet.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will open the General Assembly proceedings with a "state of the world" speech. He'll be followed immediately by the traditional first speaker Brazil, represented by its new president, Jair Bolsonaro and the United States, represented by President Donald Trump.
The United Nations, designed to promote a multilateral world, has struggled in the face of increasing unilateralism by the United States and other nations that favour going it alone over the brand of collaboration that the global body advocates.
The event unfolds against the backdrop of flaring tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, backed by its long time supporter, the United States. The Saudis say Iran was responsible for an ... |

Human activity in oceans good for jellyfish
|
24.9.2019 |
|
France: Thousands of them plague our beaches to the horror of holidaymakers who dread their sting, but thanks to man's disruption of the oceans, jellyfish are thriving. Jellyfish have been on Earth longer than we have, they are believed to have roamed the oceans for nearly 600 million years.
But human activity, from over-fishing to plastic waste and climate change, has created an environment in which they are even more at home. The proliferation of the jellyfish could lead to what some observers are calling the "jellyfication" of the oceans, which are facing profound changes according to a draft UN report due out on Wednesday.
Fabien Lombard, a French marine biologist at the Sorbonne University specialising in the ecology of plankton and jellyfish, would not go that far. "There are more jellyfish in certain zones in the world," he told AFP; the Black Sea, off the Namibian coast and the Sea of Japan.
It is not clear if their presence has increased in other parts of the world, ... |

Kochi:Climate change hits Silent Valley dragonflies
|
24.9.2019 |
|
Kochi: Climate change has hit the Silent Valley National Park leading to a sharp fall in the population of dragonflies such as 'global wanderer.'
This has been found in an annual survey held in the park located in the core of Nilgiri biosphere reserve.
Experts opined that this could be due to the aberrant rain pattern and successive floods that affected the state as the predaceous insects spend most of their lifetime as eggs and larvae under water.
The second edition of the Odonate (dragonflies, damselflies) survey was held jointly by the volunteers of the Society for Odonate Studies and the staff of the park from September 19 to 21.
"The first survey held last year in 11 camps across buffer and core areas of the park came up with 75 species of dragonflies and damselflies. The present survey takes the number of Odonate species to 91," said Samuel Vanlalngheta Pachuau, the wildlife warden, of Silent Valley National Park.
Though there was an increase in different species found in the ... |

Protect the Western Ghats to tackle floods
|
23.9.2019 |
|
Floods are now an annual nightmare in many parts of southern and western India. Valleys in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala that weren"t considered flood-prone until recently are at risk.
During floods and landslides in August 2019, two villages were completely destroyed killing several people, while a year earlier Kerala saw its worst floods in a century.
These floods appear to be getting more severe. Climate change is causing stronger and more erratic rainfall with recurrent floods in low-lying areas while population growth is putting more people in risky areas. And another problem comes from deforestation in the mountain range where much of the water first fell: the Western Ghats.
The Western Ghats run for 1,600km in parallel with India"s west coast, from Gujarat right down to Tamil Nadu at the tip of the subcontinent. It is – or was – a picturesque landscape of serene valleys, steep gorges and virgin forests. Yet recurring floods and landslides in the mountains, ... |

Climate change? New water falls in Belthangady!
|
17.9.2019 |
|
Mangaluru: Villagers of Mittabagilu and Malavanthige in Belthangady taluk here, who have been seeing the hills near their village every day, have noticed a wonderful change after the flash floods and landslides on August 9.
As the clouds move away from the hills, the villagers have started noticing a couple of craters and new waterfalls which they had not seen before.
As several acres of soil in the hills were washed away, the streams have changed course in some places. In those places where trees were washed away, the waterfalls that were hidden by these trees are now visible.
Looking at the damage to the forest, environmentalists and villagers want the forest department to reforest these areas and ensure that the place gets its greenery back.
"Thousands of Shola forest trees and several acres of grassland have been washed away in the Western Ghats. These trees and the grassland help the rain water to sink into the ground and increase the water table and also feed water to the rivers. As ... |
