Canada's tar sands companies fail to clean up toxic waste, report finds 14.6.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Three arrested in environmental protests as Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper visits London None of the companies operating in Canada's tar sands have met a commitment to clean up the vast and expanding sprawl of toxic waste ponds, an official report has found. The report, from Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board, further challenges the Canadian government's claims to responsible mining of the tar sands. Canada's prime minister, Stephen Harper, spoke to Parliament on Thursday. Three protesters were arrested during the visit. The report focuses on the provincial government's promise to clean up and eventually eliminate a vast network of open ponds storing mining waste from the tar sands along the Athabasca river. None of the seven companies operating in the tar sands met the original performance standard, set in 2009, during the last two years, the ECRB said in its report. Only one of the companies met a revised and weakened standard. The finding was quietly ...

Rand Paul's 'crunchy con' brand of libertarian politics | Sarah Posner 10.6.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
As the Kentucky senator mulls a presidential run in 2016, let's take a closer look at his anti-big government credentials Rand Paul is mulling a presidential run on the path blazed by his father, but he's apparently decided the Ron Paul Revolution needs a makeover. Rather than ride the coattails of his father, who was seen by many as an ideological crank, Paul is recasting himself to appeal to a broader electorate. The Kentucky senator is, he declared in his 2012 book, Government Bullies , a "crunchy con" – a term borrowed from conservative writer Rod Dreher's 2006 book, Crunchy Cons: How Birkenstocked Burkeans , gun-loving organic gardeners, evangelical free-range farmers, hip homeschooling mamas, rightwing nature lovers, and their diverse tribe of countercultural conservatives plan to save America (or at least the Republican party). In a speech at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California on 31 May, Paul described himself as "a libertarian conservative who spends most of my ...

Rare bumblebee returns to Britain 5.6.2013 Guardian: Environment
Patrick Barkham joins the release of 49 queens that are key to re-establishing the short-haired bumblebee in the UK The technology – a Fiat Ducato camper van with a reliable fridge – is the easy bit. But the heroic mission to reintroduce the short-haired bumblebee ( Bombus subterraneus ) to Britain is dauntingly complex. This week Nikki Gammans , a biologist and the driving force behind the bid to return this rare bee to Britain, led the release of 49 queens on the RSPB's reserve by the brooding Dungeness nuclear power station . It follows the release of 51 bees last summer and the statistics demonstrate just how challenging re-establishing a lost insect species can be. The headline figure – not one of those 51 short-haired bumblebees has been seen again in the wild since their release – is discouraging. But if anyone can succeed it is Gammans, supported by a coalition of supporters including local farmers, government agency Natural England , the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and ...

Coalition will 'get around' new law on coal seam gas 30.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Environmental assessments will be done by states, says shadow resources minister, speeding up approval process for CSG wells The Coalition says it will 'get around' a new law to force the federal government to take responsibility for coal seam gas, giving power for environmental assessments to the states to speed up the approval process and boost the CSG industry. In June the Senate is likely to pass the Gillard government's legislation requiring the federal government to take account of the cumulative impact on the water table of developments like coal seam gas wells. The bill, which inserts water as a trigger under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, was amended in the lower house at the initiative of Independent Tony Windsor. The amendement was intended to "put beyond doubt" that the commonwealth had to give the final approvals for coal seam gas wells, taking into account their impact on water, and that it could not hand this power over to state governments. ...
