Optimising Small Wind Inverters (Cached) 19.6.2013 RenewableEnergyAccess
Small wind turbines (SWTs) less than 50 kW are playing a growing role in electricity generation, and are now being deployed in domestic, commercial and agricultural scenarios. The World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) predicts that the global SWT market will increase from 95 MW in 2011 to 700 MW in 2020, growth of approximately 25 percent per year. But market share has remained small when compared to domestic-scale photovoltaics (PV).

Repowering Gives New Life to Old Wind Sites (Cached) 17.6.2013 RenewableEnergyAccess
By 2020, swapping aging wind turbines with more powerful modern units will have raised annual electricity generation at refurbished sites from 1524 GWh to 8221 GWh. A 2 MW wind turbine coming off the production line with a rotor diameter of 80 metres can generate four to six times as much electricity as the 1 GWh annual yield of a 500 kW wind turbine with a 40 metre rotor built in 1995. This is the fundamental thinking behind wind repowering.
Developing a Regional Renewable Energy Roadmap for Central America 17.6.2013 Worldwatch Institute
The Worldwatch Institute and INCAE Business School explore renewable energy status and potential in the region Washington, D.C. —Nearly 22 percent of the world"s electricity is now supplied by renewable energy, and Central America is part of this global transition. The region is a worldwide leader in hydropower and geothermal energy, and most Central American countries are developing wind power projects. Yet the region is far from harvesting its enormous renewable energy resources to their fullest potentials, according to a new report from the Worldwatch Institute, The Way Forward for Renewable Energy in Central America . "Central America is at a crossroads," said Alexander Ochs, Director of Climate and Energy at Worldwatch and a co-author of the study. "As the economies of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama expand, regional use of fossil fuels is growing quickly, while the use of traditional fuelwood, primarily for ...

Abbott business advisor threatens to sue farmer if windfarm does him harm 16.6.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Maurice Newman, chairman of Coalition's proposed business advisory council, sends legal warning over windfarm The man who will chair Tony Abbott's business advisory committee is among a group of country landholders threatening to sue a neighbouring farmer for "substantial damages" if their health or property values are harmed by his agreement to allow wind turbines to built on his property. Maurice Newman, former chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange and the ABC and chair of Abbott's three person panel of business advisors, was one of seven families in the Crookwell area who signed a legal letter to local farmer Charlie Prell threatening to sue if the wind farm went ahead and caused them nuisance or harm, including to their health or property values. The letter urged Prell to seek legal advice as to whether he could break his contract with the wind farm proponent Union Fenosa. Newman last week described subsidies for renewable energy as "a crime against the people" because higher ...

Turbine company and green groups to fight anti-windfarm campaign 16.6.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Anxious supporters of renewable energy allege underhand tactics are taking the wind out of their sails The world's biggest wind turbine manufacturer is joining forces with environmental groups in a global campaign to rouse the "silent majority" of people who support renewable energy to fight back against what it claims is "misinformation" spread by some anti-wind activists that is threatening the industry. Morten Albaek, senior vice-president of the Danish wind turbine company Vestas , will launch the campaign in Melbourne on Tuesday as anti-wind activists rally in front of Parliament House in Canberra to demand a future Coalition government stop new windfarms and end or scale back the renewable energy target that underpins their operation. Ken McAlpine, public affairs director for Vestas in Australia, said the highly-unconventional corporate campaign was being launched here because anti-wind groups in Australia had been more successful than in any other country. He accused some of ...

Winds of change blow through Snowtown 13.6.2013 Guardian: Environment
Major windfarm project helping South Australian town known for notorious 'bodies in the barrels' killings to put past behind it Snowtown is surrounded by picturesque farmland and salt lakes but the beauty is at odds with its gory reputation as the home of the infamous "bodies in the barrels" discovery – a badge the town is hoping to lose with the completion of the country's second-largest windfarm. The stunning landscape, just two hours' drive from Adelaide, is already dotted with the turbines of the Snowtown Wind Farm, which will be the largest of its kind in South Australia. Trust Power, the owner of the enormous energy project, expects to complete the second stage of construction of 90 turbines by late 2014 and says it will power more than 40% of the state by 2020. Residents have been hoping the wind farm will give them a new kind of notoriety ever since it was proposed a few years after police discovered the bodies of eight murder victims stored in barrels of acid and hidden inside ...
