Rajasthan: Ideas shared on role of tech in efficient energy 16.6.2018 DNA: Top News
To understand the use of efficient energy resources, the role of technology and innovation along with understanding the regular electricity bill was discussed in a conference on Profitability through Energy Conservation & Efficiency was organised in the city on Friday.   Speaking during the conference, chief secretary DB Gupta said that Rajasthan Government’s seriousness for conserving energy can be identified from the fact that the process of converting Rajasthan Secretariat into Green Concept Building has already begun and this will further help in conserving energy to a great extent. He also shared that for development and production, proportionately more energy is required which ultimately will result in more emission and therefore, it is important that we use innovation and renewable energy and use every unit of energy in the best way possible. Giving the example of innovation, he said that our Prime Minister is also very serious for energy conservation and in this process, the state in association ...

At a time when power sector is under stress, state-run Power Finance Corp Ltd (PFC) plans to start lending to projects such as sewage treatment plants, smart cities, railway electrification, mining, electric vehicle charging stations, mini-grids, among others. PFC chairman and managing director Rajeev Sharma on Thursday said that the company is exploring options to diversify its loan portfolio instead of limiting it to only thermal, hydro and renewable power projects across the country. In the mining space, PFC is eyeing projects pertaining to gas, liquefied natural gas and coal mining. "There is railway electrification, smart cities infrastructure, electric vehicle manufacturing units including charging stations, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, battery manufacturing units for solar projects, mini and micro-grids, energy-efficiency systems like co-generation or tri-generation or combination of heat as well as power and waste heat recovery systems we are looking at as part of our diversification ...

Test run of China's 160 kmph maglev train prototype successful 23.5.2018 DNA: Mumbai
China's fifth-generation maglev train prototype with a maximum speed of 160 kmph has completed a successful test run, its manufacturer said today. Maglev refers to a transport system in which trains glide above a track, supported by magnetic repulsion and propelled by a linear motor. Compared with the medium and the low speed maglev trains that have entered operation, the traction efficiency of the new train has been improved by 10 per cent, while its energy consumption reduced by over 20 per cent, state-run manufacturer CRRC's Tangshan branch said. The fifth-generation prototype had two carriages with a maximum capacity of 318 passengers, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The train, with a flexible assembly of two to six carriages, is suitable for operation between cities, central and satellite cities and within a city. New tech purifies water using sunlight 7.5.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
Scientists have developed a new technology that uses the sunlight to purify water with near-perfect efficiency. The idea of using energy from the sun to evaporate and purify water was reportedly described by Greek philosopher Aristotle over 2,000 years ago. By draping black, carbon-dipped paper in a triangular shape and using it to both absorb and vaporise water, researchers have developed a method for using sunlight to generate clean water with near-perfect efficiency. "Our technique is able to produce drinking water at a faster pace than is theoretically calculated under natural sunlight," said Qiaoqiang Gan, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo in the US. "Usually, when solar energy is used to evaporate water, some of the energy is wasted as heat is lost to the surrounding environment. This makes the process less than 100 per cent efficient. Our system has a way of drawing heat in from the surrounding environment, allowing us to achieve near-perfect efficiency," said Gan. The low-cost ...

Smart microchip can power sensors for 'Internet of Things' 7.5.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
Scientists have developed a novel microchip that can function under dim light using a very small solar cell, an advance that could power sensors to support Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT), while still in its infancy, is shaping the future of many industries and will also impact our daily lives in significant ways. One of the key challenges of moving IoT devices from concept to reality is to have long-lasting operation under tightly constrained energy sources, thus demanding extreme power efficiency. IoT devices - such as sensors - are often deployed on a massive scale and in places that are usually remote and difficult to service regularly, thus making their self-sufficiency essential. Currently, batteries in IoT devices are much larger and up to three times more expensive than the single chip they power. Their size is determined by the sensor node lifetime, which directly affects how often they need to be changed. This has an important bearing on maintenance cost and impact on the ...
