Girl power is on the rise in Maharashtra. The state government's birth registration figures reveal that more girls were born in 2017 compared with the two previous years. This is the second highest sex ratio since 2013. In 2016, the sex ratio at birth in the state was 904 girls per 1,000 boys, which improved to 913 for newborns in 2017. This is the highest in three years – the figure for 2015 was 907, down from 914 in 2014. This sex ratio based on registered births was 900 five years ago. "The civil registration system's provisional figures show an upward trend for the sex ratio in 2017," said a senior health department official. The report is based on the Civil Registration System (CRS) which records births and deaths under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. "The figures suggest that the sex ratio has improved in districts like Wardha, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nanded and Jalna, while it has declined in Jalgaon, Yavatmal and Hingoli," the official explained. Cabinet decision ends Coal India monopoly 21.2.2018 DNA: India
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday ended the monopoly of the state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) by approving a new methodology for the auction of coal mines and blocks for the sale of coal. Briefing the media, Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said that the opening up of commercial coal mining for the private sector is the most ambitious reform in the coal sector since the nationalisation of this sector since 1973. "This reform is expected to bring efficiency into the coal sector by moving from an era of monopoly to competition. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) officials will soon be commuting to work in electric sedans. The civic body has tied up with the Union Ministry of Power to procure 80 electrically-run sedans. The e-vehicles are likely to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 20 in the Capital. "We are expecting to get 20 sedans in the first phase. The e-vehicle project will also be launched for other states this month and is likely to be inaugurated by the PM," said a senior official. Most of the NDMC officials at present use old ambassadors. The NDMC is yet to sign an MOU with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Power Ministry for the project. "The e-sedans can go up to 140 km at a time and can run up to the speed of 100 kmph. The cars are electrically charged for which we have developed several charging stations, including Shivaji Stadium and Palika Kendra," the official informed.
