Finally! A solution to office thermostat wars 15.10.2017 DNA: Wide Angle
In what could bring an end to the endless thermostat wars at office, scientists have developed a system that can automatically optimise the indoor conditions including air quality, temperature and lighting according to each worker's needs. No matter the season, thermostat wars rage in offices worldwide. Employees bicker over the temperature, complaining that it is either too hot or too cold. "Improving the quality of the office-building environment impacts the comfort of employees, which in turn influences their productivity," said Hashem Akbari, professor at Concordia University in Canada. The researchers simulated their method in an open-air office building with five zones and four occupants per zone. They tested different occupancy scenarios and outdoor weather conditions and took into consideration the employees' thermal tolerance. LEDs to replace streetlights in city 27.9.2017 DNA: Mumbai
Ahead of Diwali, the North Municipal Corporation Delhi announced on Tuesday that it will start replacing conventional streetlights with LEDs this September.  Of the 2.05 lakh lights in two zones of North MCD — Rohini and Narela — contract has been given for 1.15 lakh fixtures. Tenders for about 90 lakh lighting fixtures in the rest of the four zones — City, Civil Lines, Sadar-Paharganj, and Karol Bagh — have been received and scrutinised. The manufacturers were given special instructions regarding the design and durability of the products, which need to have a life span of a minimum 7 years. It took about 2.5 months to develop the high-efficiency LEDs, which meet all testing standards.
