McDonald’s to recycle packaging, use renewable material 17.1.2018 SFGate: Business & Technology
McDonald’s will recycle packaging in all of its almost 37,000 restaurants globally by 2025, the company announced Tuesday. McDonald’s also announced that all of its packaging will come from renewable, recycled or certified sources where no deforestation occurs by 2025. These are big steps for the burger giant, and the move could pressure other large companies to follow suit. Increasingly, consumers and investors are demanding that corporations make commitments on global issues such as environmental sustainability and animal welfare. An education at UC Santa Cruz? We'd all be lucky to have one 10.1.2018 LA Times: Commentary

To the editor: Your Jan. 3 article about UC Santa Cruz asked why the campus can’t attract more transfer students.

That’s not the question I would pose. As your article made clear, we are well on our way to attracting more transfer students to our campus.

Why not ask instead how we, as a society,...

The Republican tax bill that President Trump signed into law last week contains enough noxious items to attract the scrutiny of the Environmental Protection Agency (if it still investigated toxic things). Experts are still working to understand all the repercussions, because the GOP rushed it through...

Under cover of tax bill, Congress gives away the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — to drillers 22.12.2017 LA Times: Commentary

Please don’t call it ANWR. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not an acronym. We don’t refer to Yellowstone as YELL or Central Park as CEPA. By reducing it to four letters and leaving out those crucial words “national” and “refuge,” you’re liable to forget that this place belongs to all of...
