 The government did not impose any penalty for violation of environment and forest clearances in the last two years, Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.  "No penalty was imposed by the Ministry for violating conditions of environment, forest, coastal regulation zone clearance in the last two years," Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave said in a written reply. He was asked whether the government has waived the penalty imposed on certain companies recently. The Environment Ministry had earlier this month termed as "incorrect" claims that Adani Port and SEZ Ltd (APSEZ) was spared a hefty fine of Rs 200 crore for environmental damage during construction of Mundra port and said it had imposed "more serious" responsibility on the firm without any cost limit. "The inference drawn by the news report is not correct. The present government has not cancelled fine of Rs 200 crore. This decision of the ministry is much more stringent than asking for Rs 200 crore from APSEZL... Software major Wipro has sought the government's nod to set up an IT special economic zone (SEZ) in Kolkata. The company's application will be considered by the inter-ministerial body, Board of Approval (BoA), headed by Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia, in its meeting on June 22. Wipro has proposed to set up IT/ITeS SEZ over an area of 19.76 hectares in Kolkata, the boards meeting agenda said. "Development Commissioner of Falta Special Economic Zone has recommended for in-principal approval (of the proposal). State government's recommendation is awaited. The proposal of the developer is submitted for consideration of BoA," it added. Real estate firm Embassy Property Developments has also sought approval to set up a similar zone in Karnataka. The board would also take the case of Devbhumi Realtors Pvt Ltd, which wants to surrender its IT zone in Telangana. The government has approved the proposal of Infosys to set up an IT/ITeS special economic zone in Bengaluru in an area spread over 4 hectares. The decision was taken by an inter-ministerial Board of Approval (BoA), headed by Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia, at its meeting on April 28. "The Board noted that the developer is in possession of the land. It decided to grant formal approval to the proposal," the minutes of the BoA meeting said. The Board also granted more time to as many as 20 developers to complete their projects. Those that got additional time include Mayar Infrastructure Development for a biotechnology SEZ in Haryana, Wipro for IT SEZ in Karnataka and Vedanta for its sector-specific SEZ for manufacturing and exports of aluminium in Odisha. Furthermore, it has approved application of Unitech Realty Project for change of name of the developer to Candor Gurgaon One Developers and Projects and also change in shareholding pattern of the company.
