Supreme Court asks MoEF to decide grant of clearance to Gautam Adani's SEZ 14.7.2014 DNA: Urban Tales
The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to take a decision on grant or denial of clearances to Adani Port Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) within eight weeks. A forest bench headed by Justice JS Khehar, expressing unhappiness over delay, said this will be the last chance to the ministry and if the task is not completed the Secretary, MoEF will be personally held responsible. The apex court while allowing operations at the functional units in the SEZ had in January asked the environment ministry to take decisions in three months. The time was extended by 8 weeks but on Monday the court was informed that decisions are yet not taken. Meanwhile, the court said that its earlier order allowing work at operational units will continue. Earlier, on January 27, the apex court had granted conditional permission to industrial units within the Adani Port Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) in Gujarat to resume operations asking them to desist from carrying out any further construction ...

Well done in tough times 11.7.2014 Telegraph: Business

Budget 2014: Mixed bag for mining and steel industry 10.7.2014 DNA: India
The maiden budget of the Narendra Modi government was a mixed bag for the mining and steel industry. While announcement of 100 smart cities, increase in stainless steel custom duty and a proposal for changes in MMRD Act were welcomed by both these sectors, an increase in royalty and custom duty of coking coal were disappointing. Finance minister Arun Jaitley announced several infrastructure boosting measures which are likely to revive the subdued steel demand in the country. "The renewed focus on infrastructure viz development of smart cities, ports, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna, power plants, plan for doubling pipeline grid, metro for tier 2 cities, industrial corridor, incentives for housing, and revival of SEZ, etc will go a long way to further consolidate growth and giving fillip to the steel sector, which has faced stagnant demand of late," CS Verma, chairman of Steel Authority of India said. TV Narendran, managing director of Tata Steel India, said, "The government's emphasis on developing 100 ...

Major implications of the Budget 2014 on India's Foreign Trade 10.7.2014 DNA: Money
The original export target set up in the year 2009 was $500 billion, which was revised to $325 billion. However, the actual exports registered in FY 2013-14 were $312.36 billion. With upward revision in Oil prices and increase in trade deficit, it is a matter of prime importance to take proper steps to increase exports. Though the world economy has stabilized to some extent, situation in Iraq, Syria and Iran continues to be of great concern.  It was therefore believed that the new government would take lot of steps to accelerate export growth and announce them in the Budget. While some of the budget announcements are indicative of future direction on the whole, the budget provisions seem to have little impact on the ground level.  Changes in Customs and Excise duties: Changes made in Customs and Excise duties would not really impact the growth in exports as taxes and duties are any way exempt under Duty Exemption Scheme (with reference to inputs) and under Rule 19 of the Central Excise Rules, 2002 (with ...
