A day after it penalised five-star hotels such as the Taj Palace and Taj Vivanta in Delhi, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday imposed environment compensation on seven more plush hotels for violations of Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM), 2016. A three-member bench headed by NGT Chairperson Swatanter Kumar imposed the compensation as it continued hearing on the Almitra Patel matter on countrywide implementation of SWM Rules. The penalties were imposed after the NGT reviewed an expert body's recommendations, which had inspected the waste management scenario by bulk generators such as hotels, hospitals, colleges and railway stations. The Tribunal imposed compensation of Rs 3 lakh each on Mahagun Hotel, Leela Venture Ltd., Fraser Suites and Royal Plaza. Park Inn Hotel was imposed a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh, and the Radiance Motel and Golden Petal Hotel were imposed Rs 2 lakh each. Starting October, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, malls and all commercial units in Brihanmumbai Municiapl Corporation’s A ward that have an area of over 20,000 sq mts or generate over 100 kg waste must compost wet waste at their own premises. Ward officials said commercial units will have arrange space for composting and that they expect strict adherence. Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Commissioner, A ward, said that no extent will be granted to bulk waste generators after the deadline, which is the first week of October. Security forces in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou ended an assault today against suspected jihadists who opened fire on a restaurant in a terrorist attack that left at least 18 people dead, the government said. The attack that began Sunday night in a Turkish restaurant popular with foreigners also left a dozen people injured, while two assailants were later killed, Communications Minister Remis Dandjinou said. It was not clear how many gunmen were involved. "The operation has ended" but searches are continuing in the Ouagadougou neighbourhood around the restaurant, Dandjinou told a press briefing carried on social media. Man rapes 20-year-old friend, throws her off a building 14.8.2017 DNA: India
After allegedly raping his friend, a man threw her from the fourth floor of an under construction building in Rohini in the early hours of Friday. Police have arrested the 22-year-old accused. The 20-year-old victim, who is an employee of a high-end hotel in Delhi, was in a critical condition until Sunday evening.
