EIH sees more distressed hotel sales under IBC 17.7.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Hospitality industry is currently having a good time with high occupancy rates and rising room rates. Yet, a prolonged depressed market till 2016 is taking a toll on the sector. Realty developers are now putting their over-leveraged hotel projects on the block as super-profits from their residential projects have dried up, leaving them with little cash to splurge on their failed dream projects. "The industry has suffered from high debt and sluggish demand between 2008 and 2015 as a result of which there are up to Rs 6,800 crore worth of assets for sale today. More hotels with distressed balance-sheets are likely to join this pool with the new insolvency laws introduced in June 2016," East India Hotels (EIH) in its annual report. East India Hotels is one of the leading hospitality group in the country that manages Oberois and Trident brand of hotels in the country, including the one at Hyderabad which is up for sale now. Trident at Hyderabad is a classic case of what's wrong with the hospitality sector of ...

Ousted Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif flying home to face jail, authorities lock down Lahore city 13.7.2018 DNA: Money
Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam, both sentenced to lengthy jail terms in absentia, are due to return to Pakistan on Friday in a high-stakes gamble to galvanise their beleaguered party ahead of a July 25 general election. Authorities have mobilised more than 10,000 police officers ahead of their arrival and plan to block roads with shipping containers to shut down the city of Lahore. Supporters of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party say they will march to the airport there, where the former prime minister is due to land, in defiance of a ban on all public rallies. Sharif is returning from Britain one week after an anti-corruption court handed him a 10-year jail term over the purchase of luxury London flats and sentenced his daughter and political heir to seven years in prison. Their return could shake up an election race marred by claims Pakistan's powerful military was skewing the contest in favour of ex-cricket hero Imran Khan. Sharif alleges the ...

When the hills go thirsty 24.6.2018 DNA: Top News
It is summertime and Shimla is a busy place. There are travellers to be checked-in, woollens to be sold at discounted 'summer' prices and tourists waiting to be shown around the mountain vistas. But, there is one thing whose mention is enough for everyone to pause and reflect on — water or the lack of it. There is an unconcealed unanimity across government offices, hotels and homes in the hill town, commercial establishments on the famous Mall Road and villages on the outskirts that the water crisis this summer is the worst that Shimla has ever faced. While the scarcity has always reared its head each summer, locals and experts admit that the acute crisis, which lasted over three weeks between May 20 and June 12, is unprecedented. "We did not have water for 15 days at a stretch. It was an ordeal for all of us in the neighbourhood. It was especially hard on all the women as taps ran dry even at the public toilets. We had to send our kids to relatives' homes in other cities," said Soma Jaiswal, 77, a ...
