Does Kim Dotcom have original 'two-factor' login patent? 23.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Owner of Mega and MegaUpload sites fighting US extradition says Google and others should help his defence fund in return for using his patent, but earlier filings cast doubt on claim Kim Dotcom, the New Zealand-based creator of the MegaUpload file-sharing site who is fighting an extradition demand from the US, is asking Google, Microsoft and others to contribute to his multimillion-dollar defence fund in return for a licence he claims to hold on a key patent. Dotcom, 39, says he has a patent on "two-factor authentication", used by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Twitter, Dropbox and others to provide extra safety on user accounts. The patent was filed in 1998 under his former name of "Kim Schmitz". He also issued a veiled threat to sue the companies if they don't help. However patent filings seen by the Guardian suggest that Dotcom's claim is predated by others filed by telecommunications companies Ericsson and Nokia in 1994 in the US, Europe, China and through the international patent ...

Microsoft Surface Pro review: a device of many talents 23.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
There's much to like about Microsoft's Windows 8 hybrid tablet-laptop – but it's expensive if you don't need all the specs Microsoft created a stir when it unveiled its first two tablets – Surface RT and Surface Pro – at a mystery press conference in Los Angeles on 19 June last year. Indeed, it was something of a shock, because for the first time, Microsoft was competing against its biggest customers: Windows PC suppliers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. The good news is that the Surface Pro is finally being released in the UK – it went on sale at midnight on Thursday. The bad news is that 11 months on, it's the same Surface Pro. My guess is that Microsoft is following Apple in trying to sell products on their capabilities and style, rather than the usual tech specs and discounted prices. This could be tough at a time when the free Windows 8.1 "Blue" update and Intel's next generation of Core processors, codenamed Haswell, are just coming into view. The Surface ...

Telecoms company Cable & Wireless to quit UK after 140 years 23.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Firm built to connect far-flung reaches of British empire to relocate from London to Florida Cable & Wireless Communications, the last remnant of a telecoms empire that once employed 54,000 people around the world, is to leave the UK. After 140 years as a British company, CWC is relocating its headquarters from Holborn in central London to southern Florida, transferring about 100 jobs to the United States. CWC will keep its London listing, but the remaining UK ties of a company that was built to connect the far-flung regions of the British empire have been gradually severed. In 2010 the firm was demerged from its UK network, which was placed in a separately listed company, Cable & Wireless Worldwide. That business was bought by Vodafone last year. More recently CWC has sold its networks in the Channel Islands, the Falklands and the Isle of Man so that it can focus on operations in Panama and its Caribbean stronghold. The Bahraini national carrier Batelco has bought the British ...
