5G will arrive in India in 2020, but stay a niche, premium offering 18.6.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Mobile consumers are in for a big treat. While 4G services gave them a hang of video calls and unlimited data at cheap tariffs, the new technology 5G will catapult the industry to the next level. Telecom operators, as well as government, is aggressively working towards the launch of new technology 5G. The first commercial launch in India is expected in 2020 but experts say 5G would only be a premium service and not cater to the mass market. With new technologies including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, machine to machine communications, internet of things, the landscape of telecom industry is set to witness another massive change within next few years. 5G will increase the speed by over 10 times compared to 4G. This will make an Indian telecom player -- an integrated digital service provider with digital wallet offerings, deployment of 5G networks with voice shifting to LTE, app-based video calling and virtual reality-based applications, according to a senior executive of a telecom ...

Out of the Nifty 50 companies, 17 have reported falling operating margins since 2016, including two in the consumer discretionary sector, four in energy, three in pharma and two in IT sector. While most of the firms reported in-line operating margins in the last quarter, only a few companies saw any major improvement. Among the auto pack in the index, margins of Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto have dropped while they have risen at Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki. Top firms including Mahindra & Mahindra, GAIL, Eicher Motors, ITC and Hindustan Unilever, have posted a rise in operating margins. Bleeding Telcos hang on to data 14.6.2018 DNA: Opinion
Meena, hailing from a remote village in Kolkata, is now addicted to video calls on her smartphone. From once a week ‘voice call’ back at home, she makes a ‘video call’ multiple times every day, taking advantage of the cheap data tariffs ushered in by the entry of a new player Reliance Jio (RJio). No wonder, the data consumption has hit the roof. The monthly data usage per smartphone (GB/month) in India expected to go up to 13.7 GB by 2023 from 5.7 GB in 2017. The total mobile data traffic per month in India is GB expected to grow five times during from 1.9 EB to 10 EB by 2023. The growth in data consumption has been a silver lining in an otherwise stressed telecom market hit hard by declining tariffs and intense competition. THE JIO EFFECT From 12 players to four, from a voice-centric market to a data driven one, and from a job creator to job losses, the once shining Indian telecom sector has undergone a drastic change over last year-and-a-half. And the trigger is none other than Mukesh Ambani’s new ...

Reliance Jio isn't worried of 'short term revenue losses', as new tariffs affect rival companies 14.6.2018 DNA: Popular News
Earlier this week, Reliance Jio announced a new set of tariffs for all its users a day after rival Bharti Airtel offered a similar scheme for ‘select users’. The Mukesh Ambani-owned mobile service provider has rapidly become a top player in the mobile service market, thanks to the schemes it offers users. In fact, as per an Economic Times report, Jio is even willing to price its services in such a way that even it means a short-term revenue loss, it will affect rival companies as well. “Bank of America Merrill Lynch said Jio’s average revenue per user (ARPU) – a key performance metric – could “see a marginal sequential fall in the first quarter of FY19” but its new tariff offer underlines “its low-cost/high data positioning” to attract bulk of the new smartphone users. About 10 million smartphones are being sold in India each month, and we estimate Jio adds 6 million smartphone users monthly, indicating high market share, driven by its low-cost/high data positioning,” the report added. Jio had on Tuesday ...

From 120 million users to 35,300 now, RCom a pale shadow of its past 14.6.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
From being a leading mobile player in the market to exiting the wireless business, the journey of Reliance Communications (RCom) shows how intense competition can kill even the strongest players. Post exiting the telecom business, the company has transformed itself into a pure business-to-business (B2B) player and is completely focused on the stable enterprise communications services and the rapidly growing data centre space in India. By shifting the business model from B2C to B2B, the company has lost the subscriber base significantly. "RCom now serves only 35,300 customers worldwide; earlier, the total number of customers served was over 120 million inclusive of B2C," the company said in a filing. By doing so, RCom is now insulated from the hyper-competition and tariff pressures in the telecom sector by exiting the business-to-consumer (B2C) space in January 2018, the telco said. "RCom's operational business is fully insulated from the hyper-competition, mega capex requirements, financial stress of the ...
