Germany: Angela Merkel likely to be German chancellor for fourth term, say polls 20.9.2017 DNA: Urban Tales
German Chancellor Angela Merkel looks almost certain to clinch a fourth term in the general election next Sunday while a far-right party is poised to enter parliament for the first time since the end of World War II. Latest opinion polls conducted just days before the election unanimously forecast that 62-year-old Merkel, who has been in power since 2005, will remain at the helm of the next government irrespective of which coalition will be formed after the election. Merkel's conservative bloc, that comprises her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian ally Christian Social Union (CSU), will emerge as the largest group in the next Bundestag - the lower house of parliament - and no coalition will be possible without the conservatives. They will have the best chance to form the next government picking their preferred partner, according to opinion polls. The two parties together are expected to poll around 37 per cent of the votes on September 24 compared to 20 per cent forecast for Merkel's main ...

Flexible and organic batteries may power future pacemakers 14.9.2017 DNA: Popular News
Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have designed a flexible and organic supercapacitor that can replace rigid batteries in pacemakers and other medical implants, making them more comfortable for patients. The flexible device is made up of non-flammable electrolytes and organic composites, which are safe to the human body. It can also be easily decomposed without incurring the major costs associated with recycling or disposing off metal based batteries. The findings, published in the journal Energy Technology and Green Chemistry, show that the device could be manufactured using readily available natural feedstock, rather than sophisticated and expensive metals or semiconductors. "In medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators there are two implants, one which is fitted in the heart and another which holds the metal based, rigid batteries - this is implanted under the skin," said Geetha Srinivasan, from Queen's University Belfast in the UK. "The implant under the skin is wired to the ...
