Coal shortage set to unplug power plants in Rajasthan 10.4.2018 DNA: India
The state’s daily demand of electricity has surged to about 15,000 MW as the summer days are progressing,  while the coal stock in 4 power plants in the state is for less than 10 days. The position in Kota thermal power plant for coal is said to be very critical and officials inform that power plant has stock of about 50,000 tonnes which would barely suffice for merely 4-5 days. As per the latest report of central electricity authority, Chhabra Thermal power project has coal stock of 9 days, while Suratgarh has stock of 7 days and Kawai also has 3 days left. The condition of coal stock in the plants is almost same since last 8-10 months, however that time it was being managed easily as the power demand was less. Sources informed that this is because of the technical problems related to coal India Limited. It has a major role in the shortage of coal across the country. Secondly, the state also needs regular movement of rakes of coal which is also many times not happening. To streamline the system, meeting ...

Solar power eclipsed fossil fuels in new 2017 generating capacity: UN 6.4.2018 DNA: Top News
Chinese solar power led a record 157 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity added worldwide last year, more than double the amount of new generation capacity from fossil fuels, a U.N.-backed report showed on Thursday. Globally, a record 98 GW of solar power capacity was installed last year with China contributing more than half, or 53 GW, according to U.N. Environment, the Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre and Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The new renewable energy generating capacity, also including wind, biofuels and geothermal energy, dwarfed the 70 GW of net new capacity from fossil fuels in 2017, it said. "We are at a turning point ... from fossil fuels to the renewable world," Erik Solheim, head of U.N. Environment, told Reuters. "The markets are there and renewables can take on coal, they can take on oil and gas." Fossil fuels, however, still dominate existing capacity. Solar, wind, biomass and other renewables generated 12.1 percent of world electricity in 2017, up from 5.2 ...

Restaurateurs demand more subsidy to replace coal tandoors 26.3.2018 DNA: Top News
Restaurants across the city are on the fence whether to rejoice at the subsidy being offered by the Delhi government to replace coal tandoors with electricity or gas-based equipment or not. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government announced a subsidy of Rs 5,000 on Friday, to the eateries across the national Capital as part of its 'green budget'. DNA spoke to restaurateurs in the city to find out whether they welcomed the government move and if it would prove beneficial to them in any way. Manuj M Gupta, owner of The Darzi Bar and Kitchen feels that the amount offered for the replacement is less. "It costs around Rs 10,000 to convert a coal tandoor into a gas one. A gas-based tandoor, on an average, consumes 1.5 cylinder per day, which makes its running cost very high. Though the intentions are noble, we are not sure about the final impact of the same. Restaurants use charcoal instead of coal, which has very less amount of sulphur. Also, this results in the manifold increase in the consumption of gas which ...
