RTC strike singes KCR: Olectra Greentech has supplied 40 electric buses 14.10.2019
Hyderabad: An ongoing income-tax search has unearthed a link between Megha Krishna Reddy, a close acquaintance of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, and Olectra Greentech, a company that has been chosen to supply electric buses to the state. Olectra Greentech has supplied 40 electric buses. Each bus costs close to Rs 2 crore, out of which Rs 1 crore comes from the Central government in the form of a subsidy. The remaining amount is paid for by the state government. In the case of Olectra, that subsidy has not gone to the TSRTC, but to Olectra Greentech, which is owned by Mr Reddy"s firm, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), which has so far conveniently pocketed an amount of Rs 40 crore. It is interesting in the backdrop of the ongoing RTC strike, when the Opposition parties have already made several allegations that the real intention of a crackdown against the strike and firing over 48,000 employees was because of the TRS government desire to privatise the RTC and hand over its ...

Kochi: Realty boards high-speed rail 4.10.2019
Kochi: The proposed semi-high-speed rail corridor project connecting Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargod will not only cut the travel time, but also "change the face of Kerala," it is claimed. A well-planned real estate development project appears to be the subtext of the ambitious project as it plans to acquire 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) apart from locking another few hundred acres on either side of the corridor. The Rs 55,000-crore venture envisages cutting the travel time between the state capital and the northernmost district to under five hours. At present, it takes 10 to 12 hours to cover the 574-km distance. The project is in the initial stage and the number of people to be evicted is still being worked out. The Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDCL), the implementing agency, in its request for proposal (RFP) document has stated that "unlocking the land value" is one of its key objectives. The promoters project land as a key ingredient for the project which it says will ...

Parking woes at Thiruvananthapuram corporation 25.9.2019
Thiruvananthapuram: The multi-level parking facility coming up on the city corporation premises has done more harm than good to the city dwellers. Hundreds of people coming to  the corporation main office premises, which house many public offices, now have no parking space. Chaos prevails at the place after the construction of the seven-storey automated parking facility under the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuve-nation and Urban Trans-formation) project commenced. The offices functioning on the premises include Akshaya Centre, State Election Commission, Janasevana Kendram and Indian Coffee House. The traffic wardens deployed by the civic authorities have no clue about vehicle management. "The warden at the front gate sometimes doesn"t allow entry into the premises and asks us to use the other gate. When we go there, the warden at that gate would shoo us away. There is no coordination between the wardens which worsens the situation. Sometimes vehicles get stuck creating a ruckus," ...

Three common misunderstandings that can cloud the edge, debunked 15.9.2019
The edge is near. Both in terms of proximity and timing, the edge looms close. Far from a passive, near-perfunctory periphery of the network, the edge is a bustling locale for data analysis, management, and even storage. The migration of what inventor David McCrory called center of data"s gravity to the edge is transforming industries and opening up new market opportunities. In an October 2018 report, McKinsey & Company identified 107 distinct edge use cases, estimating the potential value of edge computing at USD 175B–USD 215B by 2025—and that"s just the value for hardware companies. Most are waking up to the reality that "we need to expand our thinking beyond centralization and the cloud, and toward location and distributed processing for low-latency and real-time processing," as Gartner analyst Thomas J. Bittman put it. Still, to those who don"t specialize in tech, the learning curve can be understandably steep. Some rather understandable misunderstandings ...

Mysureans beware, your history in peril 8.9.2019
Sending shock waves through the hearts of every history lover, Lansdowne building situated in the heart of the city just a stone"s throw distance from the majestic palace of the erstwhile rulers of the Mysuru state, collapsed a few years ago despite then CM Siddaramaiah releasing Rs 6 crore for the renovation of this building which was constructed to mark the official visit of Lord Lansdowne in 1892. The structure had withstood rain and storms  for many decades but finally caved in due to lack of maintenance by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).  An expert committee has advised total renovation of the building but municipal officials wanted to demolish the  structure to which Mysureans hotly objected. The MCC authorities are reportedly not ready to take the assistance of INTACH which has expertise in renovation and preservation of historic buildings. With no sign of renovation happening, this structure or whatever remains of it, has become a place for people to urinate while ...

When institutions fail, people should stand up: 'Rebel' officer 7.9.2019
Bengaluru: "When an institution fails, the individual has to stand up.  As an individual I had to bring about a change and I stood by this cause by resigning," said former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Kannan Gopinathan, who quit on August 21 in protest over the Abrogation of article 370 of the Constitution and the subsequent clampdown on Jammu and Kashmir.  Invited to address the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the city on Friday, he explained the reasons for his controversial decision, saying he had felt for some time that people were being suffocated due to the loss of their fundamental rights during his posting in Dadra and Nagar Haveli "Protesting is a fundamental right under the Constitution as long as it is not violent. But at my workplace, if there was a protest anywhere it was seen as a failure of the administration. . We are always taking  decisions assuming that we know better than the people. But they have a fundamental right to react or ...

How India's ongoing digital transformation will drive the rise of its economy 3.9.2019
While presenting the Union Budget in the Parliament, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid out an ambitious project: turning India into a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025. The announcement has sparked discussions about the plan"s feasibility and the various conditions that the country would have to meet to achieve this target. This brings us to a commonly asked question: is it even possible? Conservative projections say that it isn"t.The Indian economy is currently worth USD 2.8 trillion. To reach the milestone of USD 5 trillion by 2025, it will need to grow at a nominal CAGR of 12 per cent over the next five years. With government data putting the actual growth over the last quarter at lower than 6 per cent, the gap between the current market situation and the required growth rate seems too wide to bridge on the surface. For this to turn to reality, improvements in productivity leading with the agricultural space is crucial. Public spending is being primed in this regard through ...
