Guj results to set tone for future politics 17.12.2017 DNA: Money
On Monday, when the Gujarat election results come out, their echo will resonate much beyond the boundaries of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state and will, in a way, set the tone for the 2019 general elections. Either way, the results will be read as the mood of the nation for despite the state being home to Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, in one of the most keenly contested elections in the history of Gujarat, the ruling party has risked its key support bases — Patidars and traders — on issues of anamat (reservation) and Goods and Services Tax (GST). For the Congress, it is a chance to cash on the fatigue factor after 22 years of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in the state and on the absence of a strong chief minister. The state has seen two chief ministers in a short span of three years, after Modi resigned from the post to become the Prime Minister in mid-2014. Rise of Rahul Besides, this is the election that saw the elevation of Rahul Gandhi, who, as his party’s chief, literally became the ...

Invisible public toilets 16.12.2017 deccanherald.com
A wannabe world city that wears its tech tag with enormous pride has barely 475 public toilet complexes to serve a population exceeding 1.1 crore! If men struggle in this inglorious mess, imagine the plight of Bengalurus women in their teeming millions. To spot a public toilet complex even in the citys relatively better equipped Central Business District (CBD) is a tough task. In their frantic search for a safe, clean, well-maintained public toilet, women often fail. Is this how a city with smart city ambitions rides its Swachh Bharat dream? Big gaps in last-mile connectivity between mass transport options and office / home inevitably mean long walks for women. To answer natures call, the only option would be to step into a restaurant or a private facility, which could be tough. Daily struggle Shwetha Rao, a senior manager of a private firm, had experienced it first hand on a shopping visit to Gandhinagar. "There was absolutely no sign of a public toilet. The restaurants were crowded. It was a ...

Cops dread Sunny show on an already boisterous Dec 31 16.12.2017 Deccan Herald - City
The police said on Saturday they had no official information about the year-end Sunny Leone show. "No one has approached us for any permission so far," City Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar told reporters. His statement indicates the government has not changed its mind on allowing the Bollywood actor to perform at a New Years eve party in the city. On Friday, home minister Ramalinga Reddy had said he had instructed the police not to allow Sunny Nights, a dance and music show featuring Sunny Leone and DJ All OK. The artistes were to perform on December 31 at Manyata Tech Park. The city police said they had enough work on their hands on New Years eve, and had to be extra careful this year, with the high court monitoring them sternly. In August, a Sunny Leone appearance in Kochi had attracted a sea of men clamouring for a glimpse of the star. Police sources said such a turnout would be a security nightmare on an already boisterous night. Hosts plight The organisers of the Sunny Leone event are keen to ...

How these women turn catnap into a fight to claim public space 16.12.2017 Deccan Herald - City
If someone had suggested to Shruti Chandrashekharan a few years ago that she should take a nap at a public park, she would have laughed it off. But on Saturday, Shruti, a law graduate, joined several young women to have a relaxing stretch at Cubbon Park, a symbolic effort to regain the public space. That the event -#MeetToSleep - was organised to commemorate the day when a 23-year-old woman, Nirbhaya to many people, was brutally raped on a moving bus and later thrown out and left to die in Delhi five years ago underscored the significance of what these women were trying to achieve. "We have been apprehensive of an act as simple as sleeping in a park due to the fear of being judged or being targeted for violence," Shruti said. "Though we have always aspired to be free, we are scared to act, and this initiative has helped me overcome those inhibitions and fears," she added. Two organisations - a volunteer-led project Blank Noise founded by Jasmeen Patheja and NGO Sangat established by author and activist ...

Tough to find, horrendous to use: Public toilet, women edition 16.12.2017 Deccan Herald - City
Ask Bengalureans to reach a consensus on one issue and they would definitely cry out aloud: The struggle to find a public washroom and the pathetic condition of the existing ones. This problem only gets worse for women. They are either left hunting for toilets in malls or simply suffer due to the lack of a basic amenity. Bengaluru, notes civil services aspirant Rashmi Gowda Ramachandra, might be seeing some improvement technologically. "But one recurring problem that is receiving negligible attention both from the municipal authorities and government is the provision of public toilets, restrooms and nursing centres for pregnant women," she laments. Not only does the city let down the women who step out of their homes but it also puts the womens safety at risk. "It is a popular stereotype that compared to men, women are more worried about hygiene and cleanliness. Even to complain about cleanliness, there are no public toilets around my locality. If I am outside, it is either my workplace, a mall or back ...

The political era of Sonia Gandhi 16.12.2017 DNA: Money
As the curtains came down on the 19-year long presidency of Sonia Gandhi as Congress president, she will continue as chairman of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP). There were speculations in the AICC headquarters that she would be hoisted to a sort of political chairman emeritus or patron of the party. The CPP decides the party's agenda in Parliament and formulates strategies with other opposition parties. Insiders in the party said that the senior Gandhi had expressed her desire to retire from the party. But as political observers here believe, she is also known to spring surprises. If her successor was often described as the reluctant heir of the family, she was more reluctant to take up a political role. Elected in 1998 as the party president, she held the post for almost 19 years— the longest period for any Congress president. She did not campaign in the recent Assembly elections first in Himachal Pradesh, and then in Gujarat due to health constraints, and it was Rahul who led a vigorous ...
