NGT order on lake hailed, locals want industries shut 19.4.2017 Deccan Herald - News
The National Green Tribunal's (NGT) order on cleaning the polluted Bellandur lake within a month has given a new ray of hope to local residents. They expect the state government to shut down the industries seen as the "biggest source" of sewage flow to Bengaluru's largest lake. K Jagannath, a former president of Bellandur gram panchayat, said the NGT order could not have come at a more opportune moment as the government was dragging its feet over reviving the lake in spite of admonition from the high court. "We are happy that the NGT has ordered the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to shut down the industries as they are the biggest source of sewage flow to the lake," he added. Srinivas R, a resident of Yemalur, said the government could clean up the lake in "two or three weeks" if it showed intent. A large amount of silt needs to be removed from the bottom of the lake, he added. Local residents say the lake gets sewage not only from industries in Bellandur and the adjacent areas but also ...

SC slams CBI for not challenging HC order 19.4.2017 Deccan Herald - National
The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the CBI for not challenging a 2001 Allahabad High Court order striking down the Uttar Pradesh government's notification for a joint trial in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case. A bench comprising Justices P C Ghose and R F Nariman said the agency's failure had derailed plans of a joint trial and resulted in simultaneous and fractured prosecution at two places, based on a joint charge sheet filed by the CBI. There were two classes of accused, namely, leaders who were on the dais exhorting the kar sevaks at 200 metres from the mosque and the kar sevaks themselves. Two FIRs stand registered in connection with the demolition, one in Lucknow and the other in Raebareli. In Lucknow, the accused, mainly the kar sevaks, faced charges of demolition, whereas those in Raebareli were being tried for instigating the crowd through their speeches. The CBI sought a joint trial and in October 1993, filed a consolidated charge sheet against both sets of accused in Lucknow. But the ...

Green way forward 19.4.2017 Deccan Herald - Thursday
Waste segregation has always been a cause for concern for Bengaluru. With garbage dumped in hidden spots or strewn on the road, stringent waste management is needed. However, with the recent claim by the BBMP that more than 50 percent of the city's waste is being segregated at the source, the attempts of the authorities seem to be paying off. Many Bengalureans say that while the authorities seem to be making efforts, more needs to be done. While composting needs to be encouraged to keep a check on wet waste, systematic awareness campaigns need to continue, says Prerana Arvind Singh, a resident from Sahakarnagar. "Leaves which fall from the trees on the streets should be composted. There are people who still burn leaves. This should be completely stopped," she says. Waste segregation is happening in most places but in rural areas like Kodigehalli, a strict watch needs to be kept. "Many people still throw mixed waste in such places, citing excuses like the 'pourakarmikas' do not come on time. But if they ...

Agricultural activities have gained momentum with the district receiving good spell of rains over the past two weeks. Farmers are hopeful that the spell will continue till the actual monsoon sets in.
