REC inks pact to provide loan for TANGEDCO power plant 12.1.2018 General News
State-run Rural Electrification Crop (REC) today said it has inked a pact with Tamil Nadu's power utiltiy TANGEDCO to provide a loan of Rs 10,453 crore for setting up 1,320 MW Udangudi Stage-I power project. "The REC signed a loan agreement of Rs 10,453 crore with TANGEDCO for setting up of TANGEDCO's Udangudi Stage-I, 2x660 MW Coal based Supercritical Thermal Power Project in Tuticorin District of Tamil Nadu," an REC statement said. The loan assistance from the REC will not only improve the power infrastructure of the state utilities but will also improve their financial and operational performance. The loan agreement was signed in the presence of Electricity, Prohibition and Excise Minister of Tamil Nadu, P Thangamani and REC chairman and managing director P V Ramesh.

Transport workers in Tamil Nadu struck work for the sixth day today, spurning the state government's offer to more than double their wages, as the chief minister appealed to them in the state Assembly to accept the proposal and call off the stir. Chief Minister K Palaniswami said in the Assembly that the government was willing to increase wages by 2.44 times. But the workers, who want a 2.57-time hike, stepped up their protest, staging a dharna with family members, including children, outside divisional offices of state-owned transport corporations across the state. As many as 17 trade unions, including those affiliated to the DMK and the Left, are on an indefinite strike, having rejected the government's hike proposal. Palaniswami told the Assembly it had been decided that wages would be raised by 2.44 times. Taking a tough stand, the Tamil Nadu government today asked agitating transport workers to resume work by tomorrow or face departmental action as the indefinite strike by some transport unions over wage-related issues entered the third day. State Transport Minister M R Vijayabaskar said many staff have returned to work today and expressed confidence that normal operations could resume tomorrow. "Many have returned today. We believe (more of them) will come tomorrow also. If not, departmental action will be initiated as per law," he told reporters in Karur. The minister claimed that despite the stir, 80 per cent buses were running in the state. "Many are getting back to work today considering the wage revision offered by us, besides respecting the High Court directive in this regard yesterday," he said. Implementation of the first two units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu, by Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) had several deficiencies, says the office of the Union comptroller and auditor-general (CAG).That included avoidable payment of interest on borrowings, non-transparency in availing of loans to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore from HDFC, lapses in rate fixation and undue benefits to foreign collaborating partners.
