AIR launches aggressive campaign on Centre's feats 16.12.2017 DNA: Recent Columns
The Election Commission, which has drawn flak over its "discriminatory" role in the Gujarat elections, has also chosen to ignore an aggressive radio campaign aired by All India Radio (AIR) on the NDA government's achievements between December 11 and 21 when the high octave state polls are underway. On Wednesday, the EC had ordered that FIRs (first information reports) be filed against television news channels for airing Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi's interview, a day before the second phase of polling in Gujarat (on Thursday). The EC also served a show cause notice to Gandhi for violating the model code of conduct. An order issued by the public broadcaster on December 7 states that the national and regional networks and FM channels of AIR will have to run programmes on the theme 'Positive India' during its primetime slot, between December 11 and 21. The order has listed around eight programmes which would be broadcast by AIR Delhi in this 10-day period. It has asked the broadcast stations at ...

Will follow my mind, Amruta Fadnavis to trolls 14.12.2017 DNA: Wide Angle
"I will do what exactly my mind tells me. I will not be swayed by disruptive criticism. I have a mind of my own and I will work as per that," said Amruta Fadnavis, spouse of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, after she was trolled on social media for promoting a Christmas-themed charity event. Trouble began when Amruta tweeted and posted photographs of a Christmas event organised by a FM radio station on December 12. She was assailed by an array of abusive posts, some of which questioned her faith before marriage. Shefali Vaidya, a columnist with the right-wing website Swarajya and RSS-mouthpiece Tarun Bharat, tweeted, "As a private individual, you are free to do what you want. As the First Lady of Maharashtra, your actions will always be open to scrutiny and criticism." When Amruta tweeted in reply, "Love, sharing & empathy have no religion – lets accept positivity around us & stay away from negative thoughts & demotivating energies", Vaidya amped the criticism with a caustic, ...

NASA explores artificial intelligence for space communications 10.12.2017 DNA: Urban Tales
NASA scientists are planning to use artificial intelligence to better manage the increasing communications between its spacecraft and the Earth. NASA spacecraft typically rely on human-controlled radio systems to communicate with Earth. Cognitive radio, the infusion of artificial intelligence into space communications networks, could meet demand and increase efficiency, researchers said. "Modern space communications systems use complex software to support science and exploration missions," said Janette C Briones, from the NASA's Glenn Research Center in the US. "By applying artificial intelligence and machine learning, satellites control these systems seamlessly, making real-time decisions without awaiting instruction," said Briones. Specific portions of the electromagnetic spectrum used for communications to various users. However, such channels are limited in number and can cause a bottleneck in the era of increasing communications. Software-defined radios like cognitive radio use artificial ...

Trai proposes ways to ease doing of business in telecom sector 30.11.2017 Business Standard: News Now
To improve ease of doing business, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has proposed some new measures. These include approval to a merged entity within 30 days of a go-ahead from the National Company Law Tribuunal (NCLT), giving telcos up to a year to surrender or trade excess airwaves in the case of a merger, permitting trading in all bands which have been put on auction, plus easier penalty norms. If the department of telecommunications (DoT) agrees, the proposed mergers of Bharti Airtel-Telenor, Vodafone-Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel-Tata Teleservice's mobile business would all get approval in a short span. In the past, DoT had taken several months for approving mergers between companies even after a NCLT okay. For instance, after NCLT approval, the Airtel-Qualcomm merger approval from DoT took six to seven months. That of Reliance Communications and Sistema Shyam Teleservices took around four months. Industry representatives say this delay increases the uncertainty ...
