Maharashtra's flooded farms send veggie prices soaring 23.10.2017 DNA: Popular News
Over the past week, the prices of green vegetables have risen by around 200 per cent to 300 per cent in city's retail market, forcing households to stretch their monthly budgets. Most green vegetables are being sold at over Rs 60 per kg in the retail market. Prices of most vegetables have quadrupled. Green peas is available at Rs 160 per kg in the retail market while cauliflower is being sold at Rs 120 per kg. Reportedly, the reason behind this hike is the 40 per cent drop recorded for the last two days in the arrival of green vegetables in the agriculture produce market committee (APMC) at Vashi. The supply of green vegetables in wholesale as well as in retail markets has been severely affected due to shortage of supply from neighbouring districts in Maharashtra. I-T dept busts Nashik onion cartel that made India weep 16.9.2017 DNA: Top News
Income Tax raids on seven largest onion traders in Nashik has busted the cartel that was controlling India's onion trade. Lasalgaon, near Nashik, is the center of wholesale onion trade in India and controls the retail rate of the vegetable widely used in cooking. High rates of onion are known to trigger political defeats, and therefore government agencies are now closely watching the market here. The agencies noticed an abnormal rise in the prices of the root vegetable at the wholesale market and found that a few traders purchased the onions at lower rates and then sold them at four to five times that rate. The traders, Omprakash Ranka, Kantilal Surana, Sohan Seth Bandh, among others, were kept under watch and eventually raided on Tuesday night. "The markets, that receive 500 to 600 trucks of onions every day, have been shut since Wednesday and are likely to open only on Monday. Trucks from here go directly to major markets and therefore supply is by and large unaffected," said an official. "We will know ...

Flood, other factors pushed up veggie prices last month 17.8.2017 DNA: India
The high prices of vegetables have been responsible for rising of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for the month of July, according to data released by the central government on Monday. Local players say supply disruption of vegetables, because of flood and other market factors, has shot up prices of vegetables used in daily consumption. The WPI for July shot up to 1.1 compared to June. However, vegetable prices rose by 48.75 per cent in a month. Like other cities, Ahmedabad has also witnessed the upsurge, especially in onion and tomatoes. Deepak Patel, secretary of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), Ahmedabad, said that price fluctuations depend upon demand and supply. "Last year, farmers did not get remunerative prices for tomatoes. So this year, the production and, therefore, the supply have reduced, causing the prices to shoot up," Patel told DNA. Similarly, there is no carry forward stock of onion, as a result of which prices have risen. According to market sources, the wholesale prices ...
