Learning how to deal with history -- from three women writers (Column: Bookends) 19.11.2017 All News-IANS Stories
The human propensity to go full tilt at windmills, a la Don Quixote, is not limited by gender -- as anyone seeing Indian news channels focusing on a forthcoming film can attest. Among other grievances, a section of women protesters deemed "Padmavati" an attack on royalty (in republican India, no less), underlining how many of us can do much with history -- except learn from it. Even when there are some worthwhile woman guides.

'It is not impossible to clean the Ganga, but it's very difficult' 19.11.2017 All News-IANS Stories
About five years ago, when Financial Times journalist and author Victor Mallet began living in Delhi, he was shocked to discover that the Yamuna -- "this beautiful river of Indian legend and art" -- was chocked with untreated sewage and industrial waste after it had passed through the city on its way to Mathura, Agra and on to join the Ganga at Allahabad. He wondered "how a river so sacred to so many Indians could also be so polluted and neglected" and then set out to record the plight of the Ganga.

NGT refuses to set aside green clearance for Amaravati capital 19.11.2017 DNA: Mumbai
In a relief for the Andhra Pradesh (AP) government, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday declined to set aside the environmental clearance (EC) for building of the new capital city Amaravati and allowed the project to go ahead, subject to set of stringent conditions for environment protection. The verdict was passed by a three-member bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar after hearing a batch of pleas that challenged the project on environmental grounds and the project's EC. The green court refused to set aside the EC after it was convinced that the new Capital would not harm the floodplains and wetlands. The bench also noted that the project had reached a stage of 'fait accompli' and thus demolishing the project would come at a huge financial, environmental and human cost. In the conditions it stipulated, the Tribunal directed the AP ...

Far-flung, neglected for decades, Gurez Valley longs for attention 19.11.2017 DNA: Mumbai
Should we suffer because we are peaceful, love the country and wish to contribute more for its development?”Asked an elderly villager while discussing Gurez Valley’s slow pace of development during the 40th Shodhyatra last month. Walking down from Chakwali, the last village of our country on the northern tip in this region in Jammu and Kashmir, a common sight was women bringing 50-60 kg of wood on their back in baskets. The protrusions on the  baskets hurt their backs. They needed new designs. If we cannot remove their burden, can we at least make it bearable? A room requires wood for warming when the night temperatures drop to minus 6-7 degree. After a week or two, the area will witness 20-30 feet snowfall and be cut off with defense transport being an exception.   Thankfully, Tawsif, a local innovator from another region of Kashmir has developed an energy efficient Bukhari or heater. It will not only help keep room warm and require only 3-4 kg wood for a night but also be a revolutionary step in energy ...
